Ready to move up to a dslr. Previously had Canon and loved it but old 35mm. Need something new. Want to capture wildlife and flowers and be able to blow up images as basis for creating art quilts. 80D reviews seem better than 77D. D5600 or D7500. Which would be best? Plan on keeping this camera for a long time so willing to pay more to get the best. Appreciate any feedback.

I'm not a Canon guy, I shoot Nikon and have a D7200. I think the D7200 may top the Canom 80D in terms of image quality and low light performance. The Canon probably tops the Nikon in terms of speed. I'd say that either way you won't go wrong for what you want to do. Go to a camera store , Best Buy, or whatever and handle both cameras and go with the one that feels the best in your hands.

The Canon 80D is a better choice than the 77D, and the new D7500 is a better choice than the D5600. Actually, you could consider the D7200 as well. But IMO the D7500 is a better choice than the D7200, despite the one SD card slot of the D7500. The two SD cards slots are a necessity to some, and not so to others. Just because the D7500 only has one card slot, does not make it an inferior camera to the D7200. Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Go out and handle them and see what fits your hands best. All cameras Nikon, Canon, Sony etc. are great and in many ways, the deciding factor is going to be the 8 inches behind the camera. Wingpilot is on point with his analogy on handling. Another consideration is the reticulating screen on the 80D which can prove to be easier in making a shot under more difficult conditions.Good luck.

Wonder how long it will be before a product war begins :)

*Edited for n3eg and others that might feel left out

Like we would know? Only you would know the answer to such a question. As you have already seen by asking the question you have 1 recommended Nikon, 1 recommended Canon, 1 recommended that you try them out and 1 recommended Sony. So in the end you still don't know if you rely on our answers to make such a decision.

I am neither a Canon or a Nikon user, so cannot advise.

Go to a camera store and hold the different models in your hand and see what fits you the best. I am a Nikon man and would suggest that brand But I chose it after handling different brands of cameras

Don't get a dslr - get a mirrorless.

This has been discussed here ad infinitum, and ad nauseam.
The simple answer is that in all cases, Canon is the best choice, not to mention the fact that Nikon technology has fallen into the dark ages, and the company has significant financial problems.
Good luck making your decision !!

Wildlife shooting would be the Nikon D500. Flowers could be any camera. Blow ups of quilts would depend somewhat on your post processing software. A good software program can make up for a lesser quality camera and lens. The Nikon 40mm micro is a very sharp lens and would be able to handle the flowers and quilts. The Nikon 200-500 f5.6 lens would do an outstanding job on wildlife. So, a Nikon D500, Nikon 40mm micro, and a 200-500 lens would do everything you ask.

And you base this on what? Personal knowledge? Inside information? News reporting? Nikon quarterly reports? Or, like most folks, you base your remark on internet information? What exactly are you using? You must like to pass on rumors, which I suspect, is the truth.

Yes - I BASE NIKONS PROBLEMS ON :

1. Personal Knowledge
2. Inside Information (yes - I have worked with the company)
3. Many news reports - including an extensive discussion on here
4. The internet is not bad - so yes - the internet

Nikons financial problems are not rumors.
Nikons technology problems are not rumors. Just check the reviews on Ken Rockwell. He has more negative things to say than me !

I think you like to try to sound intelligent based upon your concluding remark, which clearly, you think is articulate - but I think its just some foolish talk from someone who is actually clueless.
