If I have a Sony 24-70 GM lens and a Sony 70-200 GM lens and decide that 70mm is the correct setting, what, if any, factors would help me choose one lens over the other? Thanks for your thoughtful consideration.

24 for the widest angle of view and ≈200 for the "reach". It depends on the subject and how you want to shoot it.

The 24-70 is smaller

Is the 24-70 sharper at 70 than the 70-200 at 70mm?

Is the aperture you want to use available in the 24-70 at 70mm?

If using hand held, which lens is better for hand holding?

Which lens do you happen to have on your camera at the time?

Not the question....technically, 70mm is 70mm unless there is some nuance to the particular lens that you need/like such as sharpness/contrast/color. Other than that, no difference. I have both lenses and the 24-70 is usually on my a7rII so it's 70mm gets used the most (although I do believe the 70-200 is a tad sharper).

Aperture would be a consideration it looks like both are a constant f2.8 aperture blades 9 v 11 maybe better bokeh on the long one.

Normally cost would be a consideration but if you have both the pair cost over $2000 each.

Filter size 82mm v 77mm

Weight

Dust and moisture sealed v moisture resistant.

Close focus distance 38cm v 96cm (although they are likely similar at 70mm)

Zoom range 46mm v 130mm generally less zoom range can mean better iq on a zoom usually worst at the extremes and 70mm is the extreme on both.

70mm is an odd focal length to choose but what other focal lengths are you going to use it's a bit short for a portrait lens.

Me I would choose the 24 - 70mm over the 70 - 200mm because its lighter better sealed and more interesting photo's happen at shorter focal lengths and maybe has better IQ. It really depends on you but with the choice given I would use a 24-70 far more than a 70 - 200.

I think that this question is theoretical. When I am using Zoom lens and have only 24-70 and 70-200 lenses I choose longer or shorter lens depending on my preference for the subject and I never know exact focal length which I choose, I am looking in viewfinder and find best focal length. BTW 69mm or 71mm focal length would be better than 70mm.

Some useful links. It's like choosing between a pickup truck and a sedan. They serve different purposes. One is good when you're close, and the other is good for distance shots. Eventually, you'll want both of them.

If 70mm is the 'correct' field of view, I would use the 24-70, and go a little bit wider to leave a little room for final cropping.

Whichever lens currently is on your camera.
I have a 16-300 and a 150-600. Anything in the 150-300 range gets show with whatever lens currently is on the camera.

I would use whatever is mounted on the camera.

I am asking about the benefits or disadvantages of choosing 70mm. Does one lens look different at 70 mm than the other. ---are you saying there is no difference?
