There was a practice burn last weekend of a donated house that our Department went to along with 4 other Departments. With a practice burn, wooden pallets are placed in different rooms of the house, doused with diesel fuel, set on fire, and then teams of firefighters go in and practice putting the fire out. When all the practice is done, hay bales are brought in, and they and the floors and walls are doused with accelerant and the house let to burn to the ground with the practice being to keep the burn from getting out of control and into the neighborhood. And a good time was had by all.

Nice series AuntieM. I especially like the second to last one where the woman is applying cooling towels to the fireman. Were these volunteers or paid, full-time firemen. Our nephew is currently the fire commissioner for the volunteer companies in his county as well as being in charge of 911 for the western part of his state. They recently burned his old barn down as a training exercise. I didn't know about it in advance or I would have tried to drive the 40 miles to his farm to take pictures.

Thanks for looking and commenting. Interesting question - we started out as all volunteer as firefighters and EMTs. Then one of the Departments in the area started paying their EMTs an hourly wage for shifts, so then everyone else had to also. Bottom line is that we have some volunteers that get paid a standard rate for a weekend fire, and some firefighters that pull 12 hour shifts 7 days a week and are paid an hourly rate. We also have EMT-basics and paramedics that are paid hourly rates for 12 hour shifts 7 days a week. So we really are a hybrid Department. We have no full-time personnel - every one of them has a job somewhere else and pull shifts with us too. Thank your nephew for his service and tell him to be careful.

Give your son a "well done" for me. The job of a fireman is a very dangerous job and I have the highest respect for any person who chooses that profession. Thanks for looking in and commenting Sylvias and tell your son to be careful.

He said "thank you very much". He will be retiring next year at 52 said he is getting too old to rush up the ladders!

Firefighting is definitely a "young man's" game....................not that 52 is old, but the stamina needed is not there in the amount it once was.

WOW AuntieM, you certainly have shown us some very impressive and striking images. Have you ever considered doing photo journalism? You would be great at it!

Thank you very much. That is quite a compliment coming from you Brent. I love doing it for fun, but if I had to do it for pay - that's a whole different animal - but one to consider in the future.
