You can't put back clarity and sharpness unfortunately.

Some folks just can't be statified! I shoot by the Big Daddy Lipscomb Method (how about that name Bounder?). When asked what his secret to success was, B.D.L answered, "I jest grabs me a handful of bodies and peel them off "till I finds the ball". I just grab me a bunch of shots, hell digis, with the correct memory card, will shoot most of the great books, and wonder at the number of good shots I received! PP? That's what a pot is for!

Why do you have specific settings that you want to use on a sunny Day? Do you compare what your metering system wants to do to your ideal settings?

To get a certain effect; in this case; shallow depth of field.

On a sunny day it's so bright even at ISO 100 that if I were to set my camera to f/2.8 I'd be hard pressed to get a usable shutter speed....it would exceed my 1/8000 camera limit.

That's right. I need shallower DOF. Not to much though. When using a wide lens, like 17mm on a sunny day, with a fill flash (limit of 1/250 shutter speed to avoid having to use HSS), then aperture ends up being something like f/8-f/13. With such focal length and aperture, the depth of field is so wide/long/whatever that pictures look as if they were taken with a p&s. Everything is in focus. I need to add just a bit of blur to the background.

Here is a picture with more-or-less shallow DOF. Just enough for the background, but not too much blur. Looks better than when everything is in focus.

 I had witness protection program listed at one time for location but someone started a thread to be more honest on locations so I narrowed it down a bit. Told you I have a warped sense of humor. I move between central AL. and LA. (lower AL not the left coast). Spend a lot of time in the FL panhandle. When you're in the WPP you have to keep moving! Right? Love the sign!

Last night, I decided to try using neutral density filters on sunny days when using fill flash.

The idea is that by using an ND filter I would be able to open up aperture and take pictures with shallower DOF without having to use high speed sync (and waste flash power).

I did some reading to confirm my thoughts , and decided that I really need to get myself a 3-stop filter. No need for variable density. 3 stops would be just what I need according to my metering of a typical situation in which I would be using it. I decided to settle on a filter from B+W.

Unfortunately, we are traveling around in Italy right now. Well, that's not the unfortunate part. The unfortunate part happens to be the fact that I got the urge to buy an ND filter at a time when we were staying in a small town with only one (smallish) photography/video store.

They only had two filters in stock. One was a 6-stop B+W, and the other one was a 2-stop Marumi.

6 stops is way too much for me. So I decided to get the one made by Marumi.
Although I never heard about that brand before, the "Made in Japan" sign (along with the fact that there wasn't any alternative at the moment) encouraged me to get it.

Here is the result of a little test. Both shots were taken with a Canon 17-55 (with a hood) on a 7D on a tripod with a remote shutter. Bright daylight with a fill flash (CTO gel).

The shots are a bit overexposed. No post processing. Straight-from-camera JPG.

Sadly, I only got a chance to look at the pics on a larger screen later in the day. We are in another town now. Too far away to drive back just to return the filter.

The first shot was taken without a filter. The second one is with Marumi ND4X.

I guess that's what happens when you stick a $60-piece of glass in front of an $1100-piece of glass.

It looks like flare coming off the white hat. Is that filter marked MC?

Multi-coated? Nope. It has coating on the front but not on the back side.

That's the problem, you're getting reflections between the filter and the front element probably.

Shooting a wide angle lens wide open is a heavy contributing factor to this problem - I do not care WHAT lens it is or who it was made by !

"Straight out of the camera" includes post processing both in-camera and with whatever media you use to display; e.g. print or projection. It is only a question of whether you want to take control of it or not. If you displayed what the image sensor recorded we'd only see a bunch of electronic bits...like an unexposed negative from a film camera.

Your camera likely includes controls that would allow you to control some of that such as what size jpeg to compute and what Nikon calls "Picture Controls" which let you set things like saturation, contrast, and sharpening used in creating the jpeg image. You also are somehow selecting a white balance for the camera's computer to use when creating the jpeg.

So it might be better to say something like, "With the post processing choices my camera defaults to".
