Welcome Bob. I have had a similar journey. I'm older than you (80). Shot film for many years. After I retired, I decided to venture into the digital world. Bought a Sony f707 and use it for 4 - 5 years. Wanted to go up the ladder with a DSLR. IN 2004 I Bought a Canon 20D, several high quality lenses and shot with them for 8 years. In 2012, I purchased another used 20d. In 2013 decided to upgrade to a Canon 5D MIII (still own it) and in 2014 purchased a Canon 7D MII. It's a wonderful journey. UHH is a great site. Friendly (for the most part) and helpful.
Enjoy the ride!
Mark

I am a new member to the forum although I've been reading the topics for some weeks now. I've enjoyed reading the various topics, discussions and insights.

A little about me -- I'm in my early 60's and will be looking at retirement in a few years. In my younger years, I enjoyed photography until it was replaced by marriage, kids, grandkids, etc. etc. You know the story. Four or five years ago I started back with the point and shoot type cameras which I've completely outgrown and need to move onto bigger and better things! As I ease into retirement and beyond, I'd like to make photography more than just a hobby.

My primary interests are primarily outdoors : landscapes, wildlife, geometric and unusual shapes and patterns, etc. I am now looking at the purchase of a DSLR, most likely Nikon. I'll be posting shortly to discuss as my first topic.

I live in the Washington DC area , 3 kids, 3 grandkids, 1 jeep, and a desire to travel!

Bob

Welcome to the HOG. There is a wealth of knowledge here and you will really enjoy yourself. I retired 2 years ago this month, and will turn 66 next month on the 22nd. Have been shooting for 5 years and still learning. Have a photography business mostly sports photos (high school). Not much money there unless you can get into team photos and shoot all there sport teams. Going to expand and do some art photos, landscapes, architecture, and possibly some portrait work (headshots). Well enough of that. Enjoy and post some shots. Like I said before there is a lot of knowledge here and almost all the people are super. Thanks.

Welcome to the Hog. Great place to write to people about cameras, film and etc. I am 72 (big deal-right) Got hook on film cameras back in 1982, Had a Pentax K-1000, which I still have. Two months age I down size my camera collection, unload 14 cameras. Sold them all through a auction house. Still have 12 cameras as of today. Two weeks ago found a Canon AE-1 Program with lens. Testing it as I writing this note. I am into film cameras, have no use for digital cameras-that me. But I must say If you have any problem with a digital cameras, this is the place to be to get answers. If you can't got an answers, can the camera. Quinn 4

Welcome! If we can't confuse you , nobody can!
I own a full frame D800 and APS-C D7200. I have to admit I use the D7200 more often for weight concerns and because I like just that little bit longer reach in astro-photography. I'm your age and live in upstate NY. My lens collection goes from an 8mm fisheye to the 150-600mm Sigma. My main lens on the D7200 is a Nikon 16-85mm VR while the D800 usually has a Tamron 24-135mm anniversary edition or a Nikon 24-85mm attached. But I also have a 14mm, 24mm, 50mm, 90mm macro, 90mm portait, and a couple of other primes and zooms in waiting. At least that is the current collection. If I had to give up one camera, at this stage of my life it would probably be the D800 since it is a bit heavier (though I have probably logged in 75,000 shots on that body by now).
That gives you some idea where I stand. The D800 was purchased new, but the D7200 was acquired used (with fewer than 2000 actuations). Lenses are purchased new or used, depending on many factors. I often trade/buy/sell on ebay or Craigslist.

What's your budget? I'll throw out some combo's.
I love my Nikon D5300 and have plenty of lenses.
With the D5300, I paid $320 used (the articulating screen is essential for me)
I would start out with a 35mm 1.8 (140 bucks or the 50mm f1.4 (used $285 - $350) Then a 18-140mm,or 70-300
if you want reach for outdoor wildlife. ($1100 for used - $1800 newer) If you can handle the weight get the 18-300?
Bigger budget? Go for the D500, get a 50mm f1.4, an 18-140ish size, and the new nikon 200-500. ($3600 bucks)

I shoot everything, indoor volleyball, landscapes, wildlife, senior pics etc. I doubt I'll need to upgrade soon, if I do
it will be to the D500 and get the Nikon 200-500 for better wildlife.
Want an all in one that has good reviews - Sony DSC-RX10 III. ($1400)
