I am a new member to the forum although I've been reading the topics for some weeks now. I've enjoyed reading the various topics, discussions and insights.
A little about me -- I'm in my early 60's and will be looking at retirement in a few years. In my younger years, I enjoyed photography until it was replaced by marriage, kids, grandkids, etc. etc. You know the story. Four or five years ago I started back with the point and shoot type cameras which I've completely outgrown and need to move onto bigger and better things! As I ease into retirement and beyond, I'd like to make photography more than just a hobby.
My primary interests are primarily outdoors : landscapes, wildlife, geometric and unusual shapes and patterns, etc. I am now looking at the purchase of a DSLR, most likely Nikon. I'll be posting shortly to discuss as my first topic.
I live in the Washington DC area , 3 kids, 3 grandkids, 1 jeep, and a desire to travel!

Hello Bob welcome to the forum post pictures ask questions and most of all have fun saying hello from Pittsburgh.
Aloha Bob and welcome to UHH. Congratulations on your pending retirement. You have chosen a great hobby/profession. Hoping to see some of your photos in the near future.
Welcome! Looking forward to your posts and pictures. Happy shooting!
I can relate.... I'm 63 and am also looking at retirement in a few years. I also started out with P&S cameras a few years ago and then bought my 1st DSLR. I learned a few valuable lessons (OK, a LOT!) along the way with the help of my fellow UHH'ers. PM (private message) me if you like to discuss gear, possible commercial opportunities, etc.. I'd be happy to share some of the stuff I discovered along the way. OR... just post your questions here. Always lots of great folks willing to help. UHH does a pretty good job of keeping the trolls at bay so you can almost always be sure of a friendly, informative response.
P.S. 2 sons, 2 grand-daughters & a Jeep Wrangler in the DFW area.....

Welcome. Many of us here are your age and older. You will learn more than you can imagine here on "the Hog".
Welcome. Mid-sixties hogger here. This site is fun and informative.
Thanks! I have been looking at Nikon gear and need to make up my mind very soon. I do have a limited budget but I'm a stickler for sharpness and color. I'm thinking it's best to think lens first but they're all wrapped together.
I'm definitely into landscape and nature first, wildlife second.
I sure would like some advice.
Thanks!
BTW. ... What/where is,DFW? Go Jeep.. My son has a Wrangler, I have a Grand Cherokee. Luv email both!
DFW=Dallas-Ft.Worth.... I use a Nikon D7100 myself but Sony and Canon do just as good a job. If you can find a local camera store, especially one that sells used or refurbished equipment, go in and ask to handle several different makes and models. The way the camera feels in your hand will eventually make a big difference.
Thanks! I held the d7100 before and it felt very comfortable. I'm going to try the d5500/d5600 and see how they feel. My hands are a little large and my fine motor skills aren't the greatest .lol
Oh, BTW... If you are on a serious budget (I am!) there are a lot of options. One of the reasons I chose the Nikon D7100 (Re-furbished from Adorama) is it's ability to use older auto focus lenses. One of the Best & sharpest lenses I've ever used is my Nikon AF FX NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D. You can get them all day used for less than 100.00 bucks. One caveat, before you decide to go in that direction you will need to understand what using a FX lens on a DX camera involves.
