I am looking for a good quality camera that I can use when kayaking, I have the Nikon D500 and the Sony A7R2, I like a nice quality photo, I can not see myself putting an expense camera in a bag! Or spending 1k on a housing, any thoughts on the GoPro5 or a water proof point &shoot, I will be on the intercoastal water ways and in the mangrove s in Florida. Thanks for your thoughts.

Any "water resistant (do not confuse water resistant with water proof) camera is only going to be good won to about 10 feet under water and only for a short period of time. For anything deeper than that or for more than a few seconds, in order for it to survive you will need an under water housing. There a few point and shoot cameras that they make under water housings for that are not as expensive as DSLR ones and they can be equipped with straps that will keep then afloat. This will also act as a housing to protect against being knocked around. Check B&H for several choices.

I use a TG-4 for work. We photo document hospitals (interior and exterior), universities, and cities. It's better in RAW, but the jpg's aren't bad either. It performs better outside than in a dimly lit interior, but the f2 lens does help quite a bit. Very robust camera in all sorts of weather conditions. It's still a small sensor, but it's not bad for what it is...a bombproof weather proof camera that fits in a pocket.

I wouldn't use a camera when kayaking. I would use a kayak.

The TG 5 sounds like it can do the trick?

I used my kids go pro in the kayak. He has a housing for it, and a mount for the Kayak and a float if it ever falls overboard.
I was happy with the pics and the video it took.

When I was contemplating a kayak camera I decided that my Canon 7D w/70-200mm would be just the right choice. I deal with the waterproof issue by using a Plano case placed between my legs and tethered to the boat. The case allows fast and convenient access to the camera without the hassle of a waterproof bag. I also have an Olympus Tough tethered to the boat for instant access.

I do it the old fashion way with Nikonos 5 with 35mm or 80mm lense. Just takes a couple days to get film processed.

Look at the Nikon AW100 (now 130, I believe). It is 16mp, gps, decent optical zoom, very compact. I bought it to use while sailing some years ago when it was introduced. Then, we moved to AZ and it has been my keep-in-the-glove-box emergency camera.

A "Tough" camera, no doubt about it. I have an Olympus TG-860.
