Last night I read more about Nikon needing help. According to what I read, the Japanese government has asked Fuji to give Nikon some financial assistance. I'm sure there will be more in the news about this.
Jerry, do you have a link to those news? I would like to learn a little bit more about it.
Nikon was a very solid company in the late 50's, 60's and 70's. They had a good start, not as good as Canon did, when digital became the media in photography.
It was not till the D3 and D700 hit the market that photographers began to look back at Nikon again. When Olympus and Panasonic began the mirrorless revolution I think both companies (Canon and Nikon) did not pay much attention, after all mirrorless was an alternative to point and shoot cameras. Look at how strong is the mirrorless camera market today.
Soon Sony and other camera companies began to join the mirrorless field. It has been like 7 years since mirrorless cameras debuted in the market and still neither Nikon nor Canon have come up with a good, competitive mirrorless camera. I cannot speak about other cameras because I am not familiar with them but Olympus has excellent technologies in their mirrorless bodies and an excellent assortment of lenses. As I am sure you know the cameras made by one company accept the lenses of the other and I am talking about Olympus and Panasonic.
I am going to say that the chances are excellent that the camera division of Nikon is the one division having financial problems. Who could ever imagine that Fuji would come to rescue Nikon!
I have a great interest in following the news.
As an aside to this Jerry, we have a concert venue here on LI at Jones Beach State Park. I pass it everyday on my way home. Nikon has been the sponsor for this venue for at least the past 10 years and it was still called Nikon at Jones Beach Theater until last week. This week the Nikon name has disappeared and it has been changed to a healthcare giant's name overnight. Not necessarily cause and effect but just sayin'.

Yep. Guy Lombardo was the music director. Before every show he would come out in his gleaming 42 foot CC Mahogany cruiser and they would play the Star Spangled Banner. The good old days. Thanks for the memory!
Thank you very much for the link. They keep on saying it is all rumors.
Thank you Jerry for the links.

What limited news we have so far indicates the largest financial drain on the company comes from the division that manufactures "capital equipment" used to manufacture integrated circuits.

I guess you're #2 in this one
http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-465592-1.htmlHowever, that's better than being #100. I'm guessing this will become like the "TSA" threads, where thread after thread talks about the possibility that no one will be able to bring a camera into an airplane cabin, and half blame TSA while half blame the airlines, even though whatever is happening is happening higher on the Homeland Security chain than TSA leadership.
In this case, it is hard to make a list of anyone who has both the interest and the capital to acquire Nikon; in addition, there is no reason to expect their current re-organization to fail.

I worked there in 1963, went to work at 4pm and got off around 12am. Bus boy and waiter paid $.85/hour and $.15 extra because of night shift. The best tips were when the Shriners rented the whole theatre, they new how to party.
