If you want a good photos go with a Fuji. I recommend that you look at the Xt2 with the 23mm F2.0 lens (35mm equivalent). If you want to save money look at the older XT1 and the same lens. You will get the same or better photos with the Fuji. I know because I shot Nikon FF with an assortment of lenses for many years. With the Fuji XT@ I have lost no resolution and and my color rendition is actually better.

If you shoot Nikon DX, you know the 35 mm f/1.8 is an inexpensive lenses that performs extremely well. That's what I'm looking for in a body and lens combination, just to try out mirrorless. I frankly want to spend as little as possible, but enough to get something worth shooting with. My primary interest in it is for street photography, so in terms of the lens, I would like something on the short end, about 24mm, zoom or prime. In your opinion, what is the camera and lens I am after?

How about a used Sony RX10 mkI. While not an interchangeable lens camera, it has a Zeiss 24-200 f2.8 (equivalent) lens and can produce fine results up 13x19 prints and good results up to 16x20. The RX10 mkI is small, well built, and a used one should sell for around $300-400.

Yes the Fuji color is unmatched - especially the skintones. Makes my Nikon pics look flat by comparison. The XT-20 offers a lot of the XT-2's features but at a lower price. Same elegant handling, and refined engineering.

Get a used em10 mark 2 with an Olympus 17mm 1.8 or maybe the Panasonic 12-32 zoom

Also check out Thomas Leuthard on either FB or on Flickr

Good luck - there really is no bad choice anymore

I was going to suggest the em10 mark 2 too. I had the em10 and recently looked back at some pictures taken with that and all I can say is that camera was underrated and undoubtedly the mark 2 version is even better. And priced at 499.00.

I have three mirrorless bodies: SONY NEX-7, Olympus OM-D-E-M5 and a Panasonic Lumix G-5. I have the standard kit lens for each, but often shoot very sharp legacy MF primes. IQ with the NEX-7 is superb, and the Olympus M5 is almost as good in many cases because of the in-body stabilization. The Lumix G-5 is also good, but the sensor is not as good as that on the NEX-7. Inexpensive MF adapters are available for most lenses and I use the Konica 40/1.8 and Olympus Zuiko 24/2.8 often when hiking. I hve an extensive collection of MF ~50mm "normal" lenses and most are very sharp. I did extensive testing with a dozen 50mm lenses and the Canon fd 50/1.4 was perhaps the sharpest, although many were close. The Olympus M5 can be bought used for about $250, the NEX-7 for about $350 and I highly recommend both. I particularly like the Tamron Adaptall 2 90/2.5 lens. The NEX-7 has a convenient focus peaking feature that enables me to be almost as fast as with an AF lens. All three have electronic viewfinder magnification to facilitate critical focus. I often focus as critically on the NEX-7 with an MF lens as I do on my Canon 7D DSLR with an AF lens. DrJ

I have this combination and I have nothing but good things to say about it but if the OP is looking for a budget camera this is not the one.

Yes, everyone has there preferences and opinions. :-)

The good news -- it's a great time to buy a camera.

If you want mirrorless you really can't go wrong with any of these four: Olympus, Fuji, Panasonic, and Sony.

I'd recommend going with an interchangeable lens camera -- just more flexibility long term.

Make sure and do a little research before you buy.

Others may disagree, but the Panasonic LX7 has been discontinued, so it's a very good buy when you can find one. Pair that with a Panasonic 20mm lens, and the image quality is superb. The 40mm FF equivalent is a very pleasant field of view, too.

Gx-7 :-)

The LX-7 is a point and shoot...a very fine one (but now it's getting a bit long toothed).

The Olympus PenF or some of the earlier Pen series. They were made for street photography.

Agreed. Even their kit lens is good and sharp. Nice little package, but no eye-level viewfinder. You can add one. The Pen e-PLx bodies are less expensive than the Pen F. I have an old E-PL1 and E-PL5. Of course, they take all the Panny and Oly lenses.

Olympus has a great range of optics and you can also
use Panasonic lenses too.

Kinda breaks through his budget constraints, doesn't it?

Since I use Canon equipment I'd choose the Canon mirrorless so I could use the lenses that I have already if I chose to do so. They make a converter that works well with them. I like the M5, but to tell you the truth, I would own one. Not yet. I'm not sold on them. The only reason it buy mirrorless is to reduce the size and weight of a camera. I suppose this is fine but what if you want 500mm. You are still going to have a huge heavy lens on there so what difference does a 1/2-1 pound make in weight. If they could make a lens for mirrorless bodies that are 10x smaller than a full sized 500mm lens that is of the same high quality of a full sized 500mm lens, then I'd consider switching to mirrorless.
