What would you choose to try out mirrorless?

If you shoot Nikon DX, you know the 35 mm f/1.8 is an inexpensive lenses that performs extremely well. That's what I'm looking for in a body and lens combination, just to try out mirrorless. I frankly want to spend as little as possible, but enough to get something worth shooting with. My primary interest in it is for street photography, so in terms of the lens, I would like something on the short end, about 24mm, zoom or prime. In your opinion, what is the camera and lens I am after?

I'd get a used Sony A6000 and the Sigma 30mm f/2.8 lens. About $600 for image quality at least as good as your Nikon.

Get a used em10 mark 2 with an Olympus 17mm 1.8 or maybe the Panasonic 12-32 zoom

Also check out Thomas Leuthard on either FB or on Flickr

Good luck - there really is no bad choice anymore

I use both an old Lumix GF1 and an Olympus E-M10 with Sigma 19mm 2.8 EX DN (38mm equvilent - great for street!) and a Sigma Contemporary 30mm 1.4 (60mm equivalent) with exemplary sharp results. I also use adaptors that I use Minolta 28mm, 45mm, 58mm (F1.4) and 135mm (F2.8 )(each under $30.) lenses with those bodies. Fantastic images! Fun to use!
Secondly, I have just puchased an adapter that lets me use Nikkor F AND G mount lenses of which I have quite a few (lenses used with Nikon D90, D3100 and D7100 bodies).
Also, I use a Kiron 70-150 f4.0 lens (X2 crop factor, obviously) ($20.) with those two bodies. That lens is sharp as s**t!
In conclusion, 4/3 cameras are fantastic to use one you get used to them. People tend to not react like they do to a full sized DSLR when you are toting then around - in general they are much less nervous.

I don't have any comment about a mirrorless camera, but you do realize a 35mm lens is not a WA on a DX camera (it would be like a 52mm normal lens). Yes, the 24mm would be a bit wide on a DX about like a 36mm lens. Remember the perspective 1.52 or 1/1.52 crop factor for DX & FX. What format mirrorless cameras are you thinking of? Full Frame, APS-C, 4/3?

Yes, I know the DX crop factor for DX. I'm definitely not talking full frame; remember, I want the cheapest way in for a camera worth using on the street.

The Olympus PenF or some of the earlier Pen series. They were made for street photography.

Olympus OMD EM 5 Mark 2 or OMD EM 1 Mark 2.
Olympus has a great range of optics and you can also
use Panasonic lenses too.

I second one of the older Olympus models (em10ii) with the tilt only screen. The 17mm f1.8 is the perfect steet lens.

I believe the em10ii is on sale for $499. Might be able find it cheaper used.

I use the Olympus OM-D E-M5 II-12-40 mm 2.8 Pro Lens which would suit your purpose as well as I shoot street almost exclusively. I will probably sell my entire current kit soon if I gt a fair offer in an effort to simplify my life a bit, lol.

Look at the Sony a6000 line. The 6000, 6300 or the 6500 depending on your budget. Lens- 16mm 2.8 sells for around 250.00 a 22mm 2.8 for about 300 and a 35 1.8 for about 450. Small light weight cameras, great for street and travel photos.

I tried a bunch of Sony cameras, but kept going back to my Nikon DSLRs. Right now, I have a Sony A6000 that I like very much as a compact camera, when I need one. Being a compact, the controls are very small and very close together, but it does work very well.

CURRENTLY AVAILABLE OLYMPUS OUTFIT Olympus Pen E-PL5 currently with Olympus' surprisingly sharp 14-42mm {28-84mm effective} 'kit' lens that I will sell inexpensively. One of the best (and again low cost) street lens options with that camera was the Olympus 17mm f/1.8 lens {34mm effective}. I previously had the 17mm and was highly pleased with the speed, sharpness and color rendition of that lens. PM if interested, Rab-Eye.

I just upgraded from the Olympus OMD-EM-10 to the OMD-EM-10 mark II to get the 5 axis IS. If price is an issue it's hard to beat $449 on sale directly from Olympus. I picked mine up used for less. Although the PEN F would be my choice if price wasn't an issue. The Olympus 17mm or Panasonic 20mm lenses would be my choices for steet photography.

I tried out the Sony a6000 about a month ago. It's a nice camera also. But it is a little larger. I took mine back because I was not happy with IQ with the kit lens it came with. So it's really not a fair comparison because I didn't have the Sony matched with a prime. But the Sony primes were not in my budget.
