Second Real Person Shot From My Studio

Took this yesterday. A TFP gig but I'm getting my experience. Typical 3 light setup with 2 strip lights for rim with a gridded octabox for the main.

Criticism welcome, I'm trying to improve.

Great lighting, good pose, but there is a lot of negative space around the subject that could be cropped out IMHO. Cropping would also center him better. Very well done. ;-)

Love the pose and the use of the soft box. Your spectral highlights are excellent!

Four suggestions . . .

1) Agree with "photog8" in that it does need different cropping, something like the image here, roughly using the rules of thirds

2) You must almost always leave more space in front of the subject than behind as it draws the viewer's eyes into the image instead of out of it.

3) A tilt backwards, as you have it, is more of a feminine touch, and leaning into the frame is more masculine, again as I have shown in this crop

4) And another suggestion, which I cannot show by example here, is that I think the strip light on the camera right would be far more effective if it was used at the top of the head to separate the hair at the top. As it is it lights up an ear making that ear look much larger . . . not a desirable affect. The reason for the use of a snoot on a hair light is to prevent the light from spilling over to an ear or nose when lighting the hair. You must be much more careful with a strip light.

Just my humble opinion of course . . .

Just a few tweaks like that and you'll be well on your way to superb!

I think this is excellent! Great pose and connection with the subject. I really like the lighting and the way it rims him out and sculpts his features. I agree with the crop. What I have learned and agree with most of the time is that a photo like this, one of his eyes should be at the 3rds intersection. With this one, I would crop it so his left eye was there. It draws the viewer in even more. Great work!

Hayden, this is a great shot! I like the sharpness and the vibrancy of the colors. He may be a tad to orange for my taste but it's a very nice shot.
I do like Wedding Guys crop better. A little bit of tilt and a bit more in front and less on top. I was thinking the same things when looking at yours.
Nice job!!

This portrait is way more than stunning. What a great start to say the least. I bet your subject is most pleased with this as well!

I like this shot, and agree that it could be improved with a tighter crop. But I have a question about the models unbuttoned shirt and chest hair, is this look still appealing or is it kind of a throw-back to the disco era and the photo would be even better if he had at least one more button buttoned? This is a genuine question as I really don’t know.

Agree with crop statements already made. I personally would prefer shirt buttoned a bit more, or, depending on what the image is ultimately going to be used for, a clean waxed or shaven chest.

I got the impression from this guy's face, eyes, and posture, that he has more than one life story that would make an amazing prize winning photo.
