My Canon used to suck cartridges dry within six or seven weeks of only moderate use. I found out that when you turn a Canon off and then on, it goes through the head cleaning process which uses a lot of ink. I followed UHH advice to simply leave it on (it goes into sleep mode after a while) and for the last year that I've done this, the cartridges last at least twice as long and I've never suffered a clog. Not sure if the same would be true for Epsom.
I turn mine off each night and try to print a couple of 4x6's for exercise each day. Been having clog problems but it spit out a bit of gunk the other day and seems to be working OK now.
Just to be clear, these devices do not like to be powered off and on all the time. This is why they have sleep or hibernation modes when not in use for even just a few minutes. When in sleep mode, they draw so little current, you actually waste more power turning them back on and having them go through their self tests and boot up procedures. If you're not going to use them for a month or more, then by all mean, power them down. What I just read above has got to be the stupidest post I have seen here, and that's saying a lot. Power off your printer at night and then you have to print a couple of 4X6s just to keep it happy and it still clogs? Geez, how is that working out for you? Leave it alone.
I have had Epson printers for years--currently P400. I did have clogged head once a few years ago but none with this printer. I print 20-30 prints a week-- sometimes more.

Almost a Zombie Thread but still active so : My 2 cents - Have an Epson 3520 here at the house and had one at the office as well - never turn them off - it's been at least 6 months on the one at home and longer for the one at the office - only use Epson ink cartridges and never have a clog or ink problem. The one at home is not used that much so cartridges can last for months.
I have an Epson all in one that I leave on all he time except while I'm on trips. I use third party refillable cartridges and ink. I have no more clogged cartridge problems with this setup than I did using the official Epson cartridges. My feeling, from experience is that ink jet printer cartridges clog, that's just the way they are.
Thanks everyone for all your feedback.
I've checked the Canon website. I cannot find information if my Pixma 9500 Mark II actually has a sleep mode. Has anyone else found this information from the Canon folks?
Not a pro on this subject but I use a Canon PIXMA MX922 and leave it on 24/7 and so far no problems. I hope that I just didn't jinx myself?

I have the Pixma MG6120...about 5 years old. After being left on for about 15 minutes, it goes to sleep mode as indicated by the fact that all the top control buttons and LCD screen go dark but a small blue light stays on, at the top front of the machine. If I manually hit the off button, that light goes out, too. See if yours does the same. Since yours sounds like a higher end model than mine I would think it has sleep mode.
Actually my Pixma has only two buttons with lights. I have left the printer for hours while out to dinner, but the lights never went out. I love this printer by the way. But if I knew it would "sleep", I would take advantage of it. And I see no signs of it ever going to sleep.

I checked the Canon website also. Yuck, it's useless for searching. They don't have manuals or anything. That place is sub-par in support. I'll never buy Canon products if that's the level of support they have.
I did find that it has standby mode when it only uses 1.4W. I would look in the settings of the driver or the front panel to make sure that is enabled.

There was a lengthy discussion about this a year or more ago, and as a result, I always keep my Canon and HP turned on - no problems. Every time the printer turns on, it wastes a bit of ink - $$. The electric use is almost too low to measure when it's just sitting there.
A couple of things:
I also keep my Epson 3800 on;
I keep it covered when I'm not using it;
The humidity in the room is constant about 60%.
All that said, I don't know if any of these points are necessary, but I have never had a clog.
