Nope, it's always been like this for inkjet and laser printer cartridges. HP is the worse, not allowing anything but an official cartridge.

Yes the old HP was the best at electronic instruments, but the new HP is the computer part of the old HP that split up some time ago. Agilent became the electronic instruments group out of the split, and Agilent recently split with Keysight now the electronic instruments business.

I loved the old HP instruments, works of art and science combined, but the new HP isn't good at anything it seems!!

Best,

Mike

Probably why Carly Fiorina bailed out - - HP was hard broke, and she realized she couldn't fix it.
If she'd been elected Pres, could she have bailed with the same realization ?

OK - - lets nevermind the Segue - - As OP I reserve the right to digress

The MG5520 is $159 and prints, scans, copys, and even has a rear feed. Just doesn't FAX.
Canon carts are chipped - which makes refilling a bit trickier. Better to buy third party carts.

Doesn't fax? That means you can't communicate with North Korea. What a bummer!

No problem for me - - I ALSO have the faxable Canon 920, which also drinks ink while asleep.
I keep sending faxes to kim jong Un(stable) telling him Ix-Nay on the Ockets-Ray - but he ignores me

Love the "Un(stable)"!

OFF TOPIC: I haven't heard or seen the term EtOH in years. That's the term that we (EMT's and LEO's) used to use when talking about someone who was drunk. We responded to a DUI with minor injuries one night; CHP had to cuff her because she was combative. When we called the local hospital and said we had a combative EtOH female with minor injuries, the ER resident told us they would refuse her and to take her to the county hospital an extra 20 miles away.

EtOH is the abbreviation that a chemist or a lab person would use for Ethyl Alcohol. I can't how many times I have used this abbreviation.

This just chaps my grits
Canon charges an arm and a leg for their ink
And THEN fails the cartridge when it is still 30% full
No clue if Epson, HP, Brother, and the rest do the same as I've not owned those
But Canon has gotten MUCH worse since I first bought into them with their Pixma ip5200
This "Canon Experience" is with the MG5520

Photo is of a Canon PGI-225 BK cartridge which will no longer allow the printer to print because it registers as Empty
Yes - the liquid ink reservoir on the left is now empty - - but the sponge is nearly full - or about 30+ % of the cartridge capacity
-
Not being a lawyer, I'm not sure if this is consumer fraud or not - - but how's a layman to tell the difference ?
This just chaps my grits br Canon charges an arm a... (show quote)

Although that would chap anyone's grits, determining how much ink is contained within a sponge would require technology and expense not justified for a home printer. When the printer determines there is no more ink in the reservoir, it sounds the alarm. "No more printing for you!"

Here's what you could do. Put on a pair of latex gloves and remove that sponge. Squeeze out all the ink and show us how much was wasted. If you were one of the many people who refill them at home, you could save all those squeezings to refill another cartridge. Of course, you'd be destroying lots of cartridges along the way.

A few months ago, there were several online articles about a printer maker that was notorious for declaring a cartridge empty before it was empty, but since the cartridges were not transparent, the user never knew. I haven't been able to find those articles.

I go to E-Bay and order from ABACUS, Canon ink, 6 cartridges for 10.00 or less. Never had a problem . Not paying those high prices for ink.
Had a HP and set it out for the garbage.

I have a Canon iPF 6400 wide format printer that came with just test cartridges and I have had great success using ink owl ink. the carts go until they are sucked dry and I see no difference in color. and this printer uses very little ink.

PERHAPS the following may be useful. When installing my CIS in my Epson XP-950 it would not accept the carts... one suggestion I ran across on the net, sorry no reference, suggested turning off.... remove carts.... turn on.... few minutes.... turn off for few minutes to loose its memory.... install carts and turn on... OK yes Recognize carts but not OEM was the message... then in advance settings that was removed..

The key was removing carts... and letting the memory disappear... reinstall and perhaps the 30% carts will be re-accepted.

I use a Canon Pro100 and I load my own carts. Yes the carts are individually chipped by color.
I use precision color as my source for ink. They are a super source for reloadable inks for a variety of printers and are the third party pros for fully comparable inks.
They supply it all with perfect instructions and tools for cart reloading.
I've not had any problems with their products.

I have Brother printer, after a string of HP's. The Brother seems to do pretty well with the ink, and I swore I'd never, ever own another HP, mostly for the ink problem.

The last HP printer I had offered the option to get downloads of the latest upgrades in software. I thought, "why not". Now, I have always bought aftermarket carts for inkjet printers for the savings. The first upgrade the printer got from HP prevented me from using aftermarket carts. I thought it must be just a fluke. Had some HP carts tucked away so I put them in and it worked fine, but the after markets would not work. My next thought was, "what rampant unmitigated greed!"

About that time Best Buy was having a deal on the Epson ET-4550. It has ink tanks on the right end that eliminate the need to run to the store and buy carts all the time. Best Buy's deal was if you brought in any old printer for recycle, you got $100 off the price of the 4550. Good incentive since the 4550 is a $500 printer so I got it for $400 and let me tell you, I will never go back. I have printed like a fool for the past three months, and the level on the ink tanks have barely moved. The printer came with ink to do the initial fill and a set of inks for a refill and when you do need a refill Best Buy sells them for about $16 a bottle, or you can find them on Ebay much cheaper. As much as I print, I could easily have spent the cost of a printer or more in carts.

Sometimes it is just better to bite the bullet and spend good money up front rather than 'save' by spending cheaper.
