Texas/New Mexico Trip - Hill Country

I just touched on the Hill Country of Texas, as it is a very big area. I traveled from Ft. Worth to Waco to visit the new Waco Mammoth National Monument, and was not disappointed, although you are not free to wander into the closed building where the dig site is, and have to take a docent led tour. That's not a bad thing, because the history of the site was absolutely fascinating. I had tried to plan my visit for when the Texas Bluebonnets were in bloom - which they were, along with Texas Paintbrush and other wonderful wildflowers. The Hill Country is absolutely beautiful with undulating green hills, stately oak trees, and lots of rivers and waterfalls. I based myself out of Kerrville for several days and drove the back roads. President Lyndon B. Johnson's ranch (Western White House) was one of my stops, and I thoroughly enjoyed touring the actual house where they lived prior to, during, and after President Johnson was in office. The area between Johnson City and Fredericksburg has a myriad of wineries, and a wildflower seed farm that was in bloom. Having had a taste of this area of Texas, I have vowed that it will not be my last visit there.

Very appealing series! I love all the different flowers and the composition of the last shot is particularly inviting.

Should you ever get back to the area, AuntieM, you'll have to visit Canyon of the Eagles and spend a night or two. If the water is up, take the boat up the canyon. It will give you another view of Texas. Canyon of the Eagles is outside Burnet.

Thanks Pat. Sorry we could not make our schedules work on this trip. But I definitely am coming back and spending more time - maybe the painted churches next time. Hope you saw my first post of Ft. Worth.

I was told that the flowers started blooming 2 weeks earlier than they usually do, and were not as prolific as in the past.......well, to me, the flowers were absolutely wonderful. Thanks for looking in and commenting.

I have bookmarked this place - looking very interesting, and thanks for letting me know about it. The photos that you posted look like several places in my "walkabout" where the cactus starts to grow in the Hill Country.

The flowers in pic 3 are what we always knew as buttercups.
