I would be interested in hearing what you come up with, even though I use Nikon. I know others swear by TTL, so I'm not claiming to be right here. It could certainly be operator err on my part. Wouldn't be the first time. I am VERY resistant to change.

Here's a good on for you. This weekend, fully armed with my new, large size Flash bender based on your stellar review, I was going to try the off the TTL method you had described. Was going to follow your formula to the "T" to see if maybe it's just been a combination of things.

Well.......The area for the dance floor was in a room about the size of a 2 car garage, and the DJ's "booth" took up "1 car's worth" of space. I ended up doing everything with the flash bender. I did like the softer quality of the light, and was able to use it as a snoot for some things. All in all, it was much better than my old home made version, but I wasn't able to try any of the off camera lighting stuff.
I would be interested in hearing what you come up ... (show quote)

That sounds like what happens to me. Great plans for off camera wizardry and the situation blows it up. I have purchased some of the MagMod products and that is going well so far. Oh by the way, I ordered a voice activated light stand on Amazon. I was expecting cute as a button but it works well.

must be the right set up for a reception to work ....... lucky for me most of the receptions are out doors in my area with plenty of room to set the stands way back, this helps keep the dance floor are pretty eben for the off-camera flash.

In the Midwest, weather changes about every 5 minutes. VERY few people book outside weddings/receptions without an inside back up plan, no matter what time of year.

It would be great to be able to believe the weather forecast. I remember thinking that being a weatherman in Hawaii has to be the easiest job in the world. Mid 70's, clear, and low humidity. You would be correct 95% of the time. Around here, 30% is considered "above average"
