I think it's a great question. I really don't know the answer. Can anyone define what one stop of light is? Or is the term "stop" always used in a relative sense, to mean a doubling or halving of the amount of light of some other configuration? It seems like Exposure Value is another way of saying the same thing.

F11, f8, f22, f16 are all stops of light, say you take a pic, using fstop. F11 , and it's to right , but you want the water running to show it melting to gather like a twisted rope or a water fall in motion , so you use these filters to lengthen your expouser time ., instead of a fast
Shutter it would be a kind of time expouser shot , holding back the sun , that's all they do .

Those are pretty cool cheat sheets.

===================

Thank You.. And These may be printed on 90 lbs Paper.. I have collected stuff like this for my students and pass them out to my "difficult" ones. I too find them very handy giving talks and even in the field, while on location. It is rather easy really... Go to your favorite search thing and ask it what you want to know. It is that easy to learn these days... There is a lot = I Mean a LOT of information "out there". And it is growing every day. As I say to my students ... "You Gotta Have The WANNA." read - READ - READ. I have been doing that all my life. Some of it I did not care to read, but by and by I found that I am happy that I did.

Moreover.... When I am traveling - sometimes for weeks on end - I carry my Kindle with me... I have downloaded a lot of [PDF] files on my lap-top and DL them to the Kindle. It only holds 16 Gig... However..... You can put a bunch of [PDF]'s on that thing.

What are stops, how do I use then and are they necessary?

Using a ND grad can be confusing so I hope you have studied up on that prior to buying any grad filter. It will require you to compensate for your f/stop and if you do not know what an f/stop is maybe you should slow down and learn that first, then go out and buy an ND or an ND grad. Just a thought!

The proper sequence of "whole f-stops) is f/2, f/2.8, f/4, f/5.6, f/8, f/11, f/16, etc.

Oops. You are correct. Notice that each two are doubles: 2, 4, 8, 16 vs 1.4, 2.8, 5.6, 11, 22 . It just falls out of the math but it helps the memory a bit.
Thanks for the catch.

May be he doesn't have any lens with f/1.4 or f/1.0. Otherwise I can ask how about 0.7?
