Before you do anything else take your converter and lens to a camera store and try the same rig on a Nikon D500, D810, or a D4s, or D5. If you have the same problem, then you know where the problem lies. The D7000 is notorious for slow focus cause your at F8, and the same is true with the D3, I believe both above F5.6 problems occur. I believe on more modern Nikon's the problem is not as bad. But, you SHOULD try it out before doing anything else.

BS. The maximum aperture, used when focusing, is f/5.6. A D3 in particular will focus just fine with that combination... but basically so did every DSLR that Nikon ever made, starting with the D1 in 1999.

The TC is used, not new; why couldn't it simply be something wrong it?

Ask for your money back. It's a risk you take buying used.

Nikon has a compatibility chart (which I cannot find right now) that will address which Nikon TC will work with which Nikon lenses with which Nikon bodies. I believe you lose autofocus with many combinations.

I recently picked up a used Nikon TC-20E lll teleconverter in like new condition to use with my 70-200 f2.8 lens. According to Nikon this converter is fully compatible with the 70-200 lens. Such was not the case. Without the converter the lens autofocus is fast and accurate. With the converter the autofocus is slow as molasses, hunts all over the place and cannot get a focus lock. I tried using it with both a full frame and a cropped sensor camera and with a few other f2.8 lenses I have, all with the same result. Needless to say(but I'm saying it anyway) I'm very disappointed.

Its not just focus speed and hunting, there is a significant loss of image quality. Compatible just means it mounts and the camera and lens functions, its doesn't mean everything works well. No free lunch.

When NIKON uses the word compatible they mean it works properly. They don't use the word to simply mean you can mount it onto your camera and it'll sort'a work. Yes, there is no free lunch but lunch is payed for by losing f-stops not by improper operation. BTW, they seem to have taken down their compatibility chart.

You will find very few experienced photographers that use a converter, especially a x2.0. You have not indicated if you used a 1.4 or 2.0 or what lens you used it with. You can not get something for nothing.

Perhaps you should learn to read. Possibly comprehension is your problem. Maybe dementia.

The OP has given pretty explicit equipment information.

I have used two different 20E III converters and apparently we have differing opinions on what is proper function. I wouldn't put one of these on my camera if it was free. OTOH the 14E III is quite useable with the right lens.

This is not the first time I hear from someone with your same complaint. Once while shooting at the Miami Metro Zoo there was a gentleman who was complaining that his tele-converter was not working right with his 70-200 lens.
You should contact Nikon and talk with them about your issues with the tele-converter. We can give you all kind of ideas but if you ask me it is like guessing.
Go to the source.

I agree, I tried my 2x on my 170-500mm. It wandered after 300mm

Thank you everyone for taking the time to respond, I appreciate it. I am of the opinion that the problem is the TC itself so I contacted KEH and will be sending it back for a refund.

...are you sure about the TC itself? Maybe rent one and make a comparison...I have the 1.4 and the 2.0 and have had no problems with either, but I bought both new.

there always seems to be members here who have trouble with image quality or auto focus when using a 2x tele-converter. I am a Sony man, for years I;ve been shooting with a 200mm f 2.8 apo hi-speed and a 70-200mm f2.8 apo hi-speed and a 2x tele-converter. all components are minolta maxxum.the biggest working aperture is f 5.6. the image quality hasn't suffered and the auto focus speed is good.
