Wonderful pic of a handsome bird. The clarity is impressive with that high ISO. Cardinals make a great subject matter, but I find them to be very skittish and busy moving all over the place to photograph. I've had a couple (hubby and wife) living near my house since last year. The male, Claude, is very territorial and just loves my car mirrors. I've had to take plastic bags and fasten them on the mirrors to keep Claude away. Otherwise the mirrors would be useless with all the droppings everywhere. This has happened in the past, but it was a temporary situation. Maybe for about 2 weeks and then it would stop. Not this year! I wish I knew how to make him go away. His wife, Claudia, is not a problem. (named after the actress Claudia Cardinale). Hopefully, at some point, he'll stop and be a good boy.

LOL Thank you so much, Tom. I'm glad you enjoyed this handsome fellow, and I'm sorry you're having such a problem with your resident Romeo. I seem to remember this colorful couple from last year when Claude took such a dislike to your car mirrors. It's a funny story but not so funny to find your mirrors smeared with Claud's well aimed 'bullets'. lol Since he thinks he's fighting off a rival, I wonder if taping a picture of a hawk might cool his jets?? It might be worth a try.

What's the lifespan of a typical Cardinal?

Tom, I just read that the lifespan of a Cardinal in the wild is only about a year, but I don't believe it. I think it must depend on where they live. Also read that one lived for about 13 years, which is probably how long your Claude will be bombing your car mirrors. LOL

I don't believe that either. I've had Cardinals here every year for 30 yrs. They fly in, build a nest, eat some food, take a bath and in the winter they sort of disappear. Then in the spring a new Cardinal family sets up shop. Only last year, they decided to stay and wear out their welcome. Never had them do this before along with the mirror fetish.

You'd love it here, Tom. We have about 3 doz or so cardinals that live in and around our yard all year. Every spring and summer they have bumper crops of babies. The babies are naughty and run around biting off flowers just for the fun of it, but they're just so cute.

Thank you so much, Cathy!! Oh he has all the ladybirds fighting over him, and he does an awful lot of strutting and singing. I'm so glad you enjoyed him in spite of his conceit.
