I have 10 SD cards that have been used and shared for untold thousands of images and thousands of hour of video/ audio for my channel on youtube between a 7D, 5DMIII and now a 5DMk4 over more than 5 years. All have performed flawlessly.

All have been properly formatted after each shoot on a PC and not with the camera.

Never ever have I had any issue and never have I had any need to use dedicated cards.

A properly formatted card is a universally formatted card and has nothing to do with the device they are used in. https://www.sdcard.org/developers/overview/

Today's cameras are designed to add the file information at power on to work within the standards set in 2000.

I stand behind what I say with actual data.

I don't disagree with you. (you'll see that I gave your last comment three "thumbs" up). I only said that I format in device and have dedicated cards out of "OCD" actually, just have several cards in the camera bags with each camera body for convenience. The one in my P&S has been in that camera since new. And the one in my phone is on it's fourth phone. I don't "swap" cards amongst devices (unless reading them in computers counts..) because I don't HAVE to, NOT that there's a technical reason not to.

Making an effort to assign each card to a specific camera is logically the same as a kitten chasing its tail. Very entertaining, keeps them busy, and causes a lot of laughs.

But there are no valid reasons to make that effort, just excuses for not thinking!

I never format a card until I am ready to use it, so it is always formatted in the camera I will be shooting with.

But, the real reason I do it this way is in case I screw something up on the computer. My images may be safe for a week or more before I get around to using a particular card.

I have the cards WITH the cameras in their bags, What the he** is so hard about that? If you want to use one card with 10 cameras or 10 cards with one camera, It makes no difference, I've only said what I do, not what "everyone" MUST do, If people are so mathematically challenged as to have 2 or 3 different cameras worth 1000s of dollars but only have 1 or 2 cards worth 50 bucks, What do I care. Obviously no one actually read any of my comments.....

There is also no valid reason to ever format a card if you don't swap them between cameras.

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but... I have seen some cameras with firmware that will work perfectly with CF (I have some older Canons) cards up to 32GB (maybe larger, I don't have larger), but if you use the camera to format them the result is only 2GB of usable space. Format on the computer and the camera sees and uses the 32GB just perfect.

What makes this issue even more annoying is that if you are non-technical, getting windows to turn that card back into a 32GB card is slightly non-trivial.

And none if you do. Did you mean to say something?

I don't share cards between cameras. That's why I had to actually do the experiment.

If you can afford a D810 and a D500 it seems like false economy to not have dedicated spare SD cards, especially if you are also planning to spend thousands traveling.

I would not even trust the SD or CF cards for more than a day. I back mine up to a PC each night and I don't delete anything until I have multiple backups.

As you often do,you portray yourself as an arrogant and self-righteous ass. My previous explanation received a condescending reply and this one is a nasty follow up. This is not the Attic.

Please do not respond to my threads.

The camera is just a computer, basically, and just like a computer.......if you format on one, and another can read it, your good to go. If the camera can not read it, you will usually geta msg, card not formatted.
