Is it advisable to format a card in a particular model for use in that model or is formatting a card in one model okay to use in any model of the same brand? I heard both methods and can't find a definitive answer. We have a D3100,D7100,D810 and D500.

That's because there isn't one. For what it's worth (and that ain't much) I always use the card formatted in that camera. Get a cheap card and experiment. What do you have to lose?

Perhaps you could try both and see what work for you and your cameras. I shoot Nikon (DX and FX) and always format/reformat the memory card when using a different model. chase

The three cameras we'll take on our trip all use the same battery and I'd like to have a few cards formatted and just be able to grab one and stuff it in any camera without being concerned with which camera needs it. I like convenience and quick interchangeabilty, particularly being on the go several hours a day.

I always format the card in the camera I am using.

I remembered that about you. But just think, it only takes a few seconds to format a card. Don't let your OCD take control.

LOL! Think about the capabilities though. I could be in an area, shoot wildlife with the D500 and then pop the same card into the D810 and shoot landscape in the same area. When you shoot four thousand or so pics on a trip,it would be nice to group them together geographically. I posed this query to Nikon support and should get a response in a few days, but I know we've got experts here on the forum who would be faster and reliable.

With those cameras it won't make any difference which camera formatted the card nor any difference which camera last wrote to the card.

To be honest though, I would put an XQD card in the D500 and a CF card in the D810.

Enjoy yourself.

Had I been thinking I would have checked with you in the first place! Thank you!

Yes, I use the Xqd and CF's for Raw and the SD's for Jpeg back up,my wife likes the Jpegs.

It is always a good idea to format the card in/for the camera it is used in (it is actually priming the card for the specific camera and only that camera, although it is possible to use it in another camera, if same made and model without creating any problems, but one should avoid of making that a habit!

I've always heard it is best to format in the camera you are using the card in. Not in the computer, not in different cameras. Make this rule and it's one issue you never have to revisit.

Good Shooting

I always format my cards for the camera they are being used in. That way I know they will work unless the card itself has failed (Which hasn't happened to me ever so far).
It takes a few seconds and is worth the peace of mind.

If you want to be perfectly safe; format the card before you remove it from a camera and when you put it in the next camera, format it again. This way you have covered the bases for yourself from both cameras and should not encounter a problem.
