The professionals you see along the side at a big game use Canon and Nikon out of two reasons: one is of course inertia, that's what pros always used, and two is that their employers or clients may demand certain cameras be used. There was quite a bit of time where stock agencies had lists of cameras from which they would accept files. Don't know if that's still the case.

I think you are mistaken. You cannot get the upper hand by descending to the mud puddle. If you wrestle with a pig, all you get is tired and dirty, and the pig loves it.

Hard to listen to people who are wrong and incompetent. But if they don't want to listen - I make my point and stop. They can continue to live in mud !

Mark, you were the one that started making derogatory and unsupportable comments:

"Anyone thinking that the future for EVERYONE is not mirrorless, has their heads in the sand."

"Since there is not [sic] other alternative right now to mirrorless, the move to mirrorless is absolute."

"really, ???
I guess you belong to the camp that thinks the sun may not rise tomorrow.
Or maybe you believe the earth is still flat.
Or maybe you believe that the Russians altered the election for Trump.
Or maybe you believe that you have a head on your shoulder..."

"Of course.

Mark, if you are an educator, first I suggest that you copy edit your posts for spelling and grammar. Secondly, you have not made objective statements in this thread, but rather tried to dictate somewhat subjective and biased statements such as:

"go for a Canon M5.
Dont let anyone tell you otherwise.
Great specs. Great camera. And with an adapter - you can use your old lenses.
plus the M lenses - while limited range - are small, light and excellent."

Which is highly opinionated and also extremely subjective not to mention dictatorial and arrogant. I'm a long term Canon user, and the EOS M5 is a good camera, but it is still behind the market leaders such as Sony, Panasonic, Fujifilm, Olympus and others. I would certainly suggest "considering" the EOS M5, but only along side other possibilities. Personally I am not interested in a mirrorless camera at this point, since I have not yet seen any compelling reason to move from a DSLR to something else for my own needs, but they are my criteria not other people's criteria. Part of the reason is that I like Canon and have a substantial investment in Canon systems, but no matter how good the EOS M5 maybe I do not think that it is good enough yet and I would not buy one personally. Maybe the EOS Mi6 or EOS M15!

So, Mark, I have no idea of what kind of educator you are, but reading through your many posts does not give me much confidence. I may not always agree with CatMarley but I do respect her opinion, knowledge and experience. As far as I can tell the only thing that she and I may disagree about in the context of this thread is the pace of the change that is occurring as camera technology moves towards mirrorless and possibly other technologies. My experience in technology demonstrates that adoption rates are typically much slower than entrepreneurs, technologists, marketing people and even some consumers like to suggest, even if the end result is eventually the same. It is almost impossible to predict vendor rankings accurately beyond a year or two.

Finally, if you are indeed an educator then you have a responsibility to present balanced advice in a reasonable manner. I have not observed you doing that but rather dragging the discussion down into the muck in a highly biased way. However, having been a spelunker I am used to plumbing the depths and sometimes swimming through mud, so I can go there if I have to!

Can I have ice cream or a glass of wine instead of popcorn?

My mind is made up, I am sorry if I wasn't clear, and no my head is held high in the fresh air, not in a dark place.

Mirrorless or some other equivalent technology will make DSLRs obsolete eventually, but it won't happen very quickly as some people erroneously suggest. Sony is doing OK for now, but it has its own problems to deal with as a company and we have yet to see what Nikon and Canon will do, they both have time to respond, and Canon is better positioned than Nikon. Both are positioned better than Sony in many respects.

It has taken about ten years for smartphones to kill the P&S market, the high end camera market is more complex so that transition will take longer.

As I have been saying consistently, Sony is doing good things and is shaking up the camera market, but it is coming from behind, it will take time to play out and Sony may not end up as a winner. Many of its core businesses (much bigger than cameras) are under significant threat from both competitors and market changes. The camera division could become an unaffordable luxury for Sony when the bigger picture is taken into account. They appear to be doing an OK job of the turnaround so far, but both the technology and entertainment markets are very fickle things.

We have to see how the market plays out, and only time will tell.

Hey - Here's some comments :

My mind is made up, I am sorry if I wasn't clear, and no my head is held high in the fresh air, not in a dark place.
YOU MAY THINK YOU ARE BEING CLEAR - THAT DOES NOT MAKE YOU RIGHT.

Mirrorless or some other equivalent technology will make DSLRs obsolete eventually, but it won't happen very quickly as some people erroneously suggest.
NOBODY SAID IT WOULD HAPPEN NEXT YEAR - BUT IT WILL NOT TAKE ANOTHER 10 YEARS EITHER. IT TOOK LESS THAN 10 YEARS TO GO FROM FILM TO DIGITAL - AND THAT WAS A MUCH BIGGER CHANGE ANBC CONCEPT. THIS IS JUST A TECHNOLOGY CHANGE WITHIN THE CAMERA. 10 YEARS ??
ARE YOU KIDDING? LOOK AT THE TECHNOLOGY CHANGE FROM THE OLD NOKIA DUMB PHONES, TO THE LEVEL OF SMART PHONES TODAY. THAT IS NOW 9 YEARS IN THE MAKING. A TODAL WAVE OF DEVELOPMENTS COMPARED TO GOING FROM A DLSR TO A MIRRORLESS. AND FAR MORE ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY. THE TECHNOLOGY CHANGE FROM DSLR TO MIRRORLESS IS ALMOST A TRIVIAL TECHNOLOGY CHANGE BY COMPARISON.

Sony is doing OK for now, but it has its own problems to deal with as a company and we have yet to see what Nikon and Canon will do, they both have time to respond, and Canon is better positioned than Nikon. Both are positioned better than Sony in many respects.
YES - THEY ARE - WHICH IS WHY THEY WILL END UP DOMINATING THE BUSINESS WHEN THEY DECIDE TO GET AROUND TO IT.

It has taken about ten years for smartphones to kill the P&S market, the high end camera market is more complex so that transition will take longer.
THATS BECAUSE SMARTPHONES HAVE ONLY EXISTED FOR 9 YEARS. THE CAMERA MARKET WILL NOT TAKE LONGER. THAT IS AN ABSURD PROPOSITION.

DOES THE CAMERA DIVISION MAKE MONEY?? I ASSUME IT DOES.... IF IT DOES, WHY WOULD IT BE AN UNAFFORDABLE LUXURY ?

PROFOUND STATEMENT. YES - TIME WILL TELL.

So you are shouting now, that's a powerful educational technique! You appear to be out of your league good sir. Possibly even raving and drooling! I can provide evidence to support my thesis, can you?

And as somebody said recently:

Did you hear what Trump said about Pink Floyd? He wants to make them pay for The Wall

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrxX9TBj2zY

We don't need no education
We don't need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teachers leave them kids alone
Hey! Teachers! Leave them kids alone
All in all it's just another brick in the wall
All in all you're just another brick in the wall

We don't need no education
We don't need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teachers leave those kids alone
Hey! Teachers! Leave those kids alone
All in all you're just another brick in the wall
All in all you're just another brick in the wall

"Wrong, do it again!"
"If you don't eat yer meat, you can't have any pudding
How can you have any pudding if you don't eat yer meat?"
"You! Yes, you behind the bike sheds, stand still laddy!"

I posted my reply in CAPS only to make it differentiated from your comments so that a reader could easily discern what I was saying and what you were saying.
I was not screaming. I dont scream. I am quite a controlled and calm person.

Your reply is juvenile. There is nothing more to say.
You seem to be highly opinionated, juvenile, and not clear headed. The description sounds like trying to have an intelligent conversation with a 4 year old that wants to watch tv and not go to bed.

So why dont you simply go to bed. We made our points and no one is interested in your Pink Floyd lyrics. You are just showing your age.

My, you are so easy to tease and tweak! You clearly do not understand internet etiquette and you can't even respond in a calm and intellectual manner without making grammatical errors.

Perhaps a mirror could be of service to you.
