If the MAh rating is the same or better, the third party battery should be okay. If not, you can usually buy 3-4 for the price of one OEM. Toss the bad ones in an approved recycle center's battery bin.

You are absolutely correct on all points. To use the Mercedes Vs Chevy example, I know people who have bought nothing but Chevy's all their life because their father did and the grandfather did as well. All were excellent cars. Then there are people who have bought a new Mercedes due to its perceived quality and ended up with a lemon. Nikon and Canon must certainly contract for a battery company to produce their batteries. 99% are most likely excellent. Some not so much.
