B&H included a Watson battery with a D4s. I alternate it and the Nikon battery and haven't noticed a difference. Other than the Watson, my other batteries for DSLRs are all Nikon.

I bought Wasabi batteries for a Sony and a Panasonic, mostly for the chargers. One battery swelled a little the first time I charged it making a tight fit in the camera. I emailed the vendor a picture of the battery and a replacement was in the mail the same day. I took the bad one apart and found the problem was actually the case. I dropped it in a battery recycle bin. I have been using them interchangeably with the OEMs.

Bill is that OEM or is that a chant because you have suffered from non OEM batteries? Ha. Sorry but I couldn't resist.

It really depends on the brand. I've had 2 OEM batteries go bad within a year, two third party batteries go bad within a year, and several of each last 5-6 years. I have had one large third party video camera battery case split, while the battery was on the camera. The battery cell cluster fell onto a concrete sidewalk, shorted, and caught fire immediately. I bought a Canon replacement for that one.

If the MAh rating is the same or better, the third party battery should be okay. If not, you can usually buy 3-4 for the price of one OEM. Toss the bad ones in an approved recycle center's battery bin.

You are absolutely correct on all points. To use the Mercedes Vs Chevy example, I know people who have bought nothing but Chevy's all their life because their father did and the grandfather did as well. All were excellent cars. Then there are people who have bought a new Mercedes due to its perceived quality and ended up with a lemon. Nikon and Canon must certainly contract for a battery company to produce their batteries. 99% are most likely excellent. Some not so much.

I see the original battery that came with my Nikon is about double the price as the (non-Nikon) ones selling on Amazon.
Are these batteries just as good? Anyone have experience with them?

I have only had my Canon 80D for 3 1/2 months, so I haven't yet really pushed the battery, but it seems like it will do more than the ~900 photos Canon says it will. I also bought a 2 pack of Wasabi batteries from Amazon, but haven't used them yet. One reason for getting them (besides price) was the charger that came with them that I can plug into the 12V outlet in my car and camping trailer. My previous experience of using my Canon SX-40 for about 4 1/2 years was there was very little difference between OEM and non-OEM batteries. I push my batteries the hardest at the sports car races, where I typically take 1,000-2,000 photos and about 15 minutes of video per day over a 3 day race weekend. I'm going to the vintage sports car races at Sears Point (Sonoma Raceway) tomorrow for the first significant test. When it comes to SD cards, I use mostly SanDisk, and never an "off brand."

I had a 3rd party, one day the camera decided it didnt like it and told me to put in a real battery.
I called the manuf, they took it back and sent a new one and ive used it for 4 years now, no problems
