Thanks for posting this. The recent lenses and camera models from Pentax are top notch - high mass market share isn'the always the best criteria of high quality. Pentax lenses and bodies are up there in quality with any nikons or canon in its price or category.

Having just looked in greater detail about two of the Pentax lenses, (70-200 & 150-450), I now see why the price is a bit higher than you'd expect from Pentax. They have improved more than just the optics!

I don't think anyone has a good method to lock the zoom ability from drifting. Irex has a focus lock but they only provide manual focus and fixed lenses.

Pentax now has a Preset button on their 150 to 450 lens. It lets you record a focus point after focusing so you can focus on something else, then quickly come right back to the original focus without another hunt for the proper focus. (Wish I had that ability while covering sports! I can see a great need for naturalists and bird watchers too.)

Check out the Focus Range Limiter. That lets you set the lens to focus full range fast and quietly, or to set it to focus at close ranges or far away ranges. That speeds up an already fast focus if you use it and that comes one both the 150 - 450 and the 70 - 200.

Then they added a SP (Super Protect) Coating to the glass. (I just might consider not using a clear filter to repel the dust, water and grease... well maybe not. LoL)

Those who thought Pentax was just about washed up better think harder. They've got a full frame and crop DSLR's that have many excellent features that other wish they had and now they're improving their lenses. That kind of puts the "big two" camera Mfg's in catchup mode. LoL

I wonder what else they're doing?

Canon has the preset button for years! The focus limiter is in use ( I think by every lens maker), also for many, many years!

Many other lenses besides Pentax's have those features too. Seems to me they are catching up with the pack, not inventing new features.

At least they are doing it. This shows that they are serious about the line making FF camera and professional level lenses. Likely will not become a dominant pro used system but provides others with pro quality and features at a good price point.

My Sony A77II can do the following with any Sony or Minolta AF lens. "Check out the Focus Range Limiter. That lets you set the lens to focus full range fast and quietly, or to set it to focus at close ranges or far away ranges".

I've always contended that the Pentaxes were better engineered and built than most other DSLRs below the professional level. I may not be shooting Pentax, but I have and would again--especially if they come out with a good MILC. CaNik have both bungled that option. (Even the Canon M5 misses the boat and it is better than the Nikons.) Yes, Nikon, I have loved you for many years, but you are still stuck in the past century.

Pentax's pixel shift technology, when it's possible to use it, gives cleaner images with higher DR than either Canon or Nikon, especially the former.

Why do you call it Pentax's pixel shift thechnology? It too has been around for years by other makers, so Pentax is finally catching on!

Pentax has made excellent camera's and lenses since the Spotmatics (thread mount) SLR and the Super Takumar lenses all in the late 60's and 70's. It's not surprising that Pentax has improved throughout that time... up to today. No argument from me there.

However, Olympus has been one of the most creative camera companies since the 60's right through today... 4/3 and micro 4/3 sensors. First with 5 Axis Image Stabilization... many more.

Fujica developed EBC coatings for their lenses decades ago and only improved it since then. (Electric Beam Coating for anti flare).

My point is that no camera company holds the control on new and innovative products. Some do become lax, because they think they own the market.. I put Canon and Nikon in this category, but it's catching up with them. I don't consider either one of them great, or creative/innovative. Their status (lack of) in the mirrorless market is evident in this arena. I have not bought them for a long time, and will not now.

Sony... new player trying to capture market.

Pentax, always high regard for them, just as with Olympus and Fujifilm, which is what I have shot for some time now. Do I think Pentax is superior in some way. No. Just a creative company stretching for market share.

Ditto! A wealth of knowledge about anything Pentax. They also have an excellent Lens Review section that also covers many third-party lenses. Check the banner along the top of the home page for their index. Very helpful.

Hello! I cannot answer this question, as I'm an extreme newbie. I'm pleased to find a Pentax question, because I'm only using a Pentax K10D (entry-level DSLR) because I had been using 3 K1000 35mm entry-level cameras, and I had many lenses that I still wished to use, and I can, on the K10D. I've been "looking and learning" for a month or so, and have seen that most folks here use much more expensive cameras that are out of my reach, so nice to see information about the lower end! So much to learn! So little time!

Bob, the K10D is a fine DSLR. For several years, I shot with a Pentax K2000, an entry-level 10.2 MP camera that provided me with many thousands of fine images over the years. I then moved up to a 12.4 MP Pentax Kx. I still have it and occasionally will use it just because it's kinda' like visiting an old friend. It too has provided me with an untold number of very fine images. I now shoot with either a K-50 or a K-30.... both 16.2 MPs. I've considered up-grading to one of the more "up-to-date" models, but for the type of photography I do, it just doesn't make much sense. I've only had a few images enlarged beyond 8" x 10" in the past 10 years, so I see no reason to "up-grade." Besides that, I'm on a fixed income and don't have a lot of $$$$ to spend on camera gear.

Photography is my hobby, not my profession and I tend to not fix things that aren't broken. I cut my teeth on a Pentax Spotmatic back in 1966 when I was a US Navy photographer and have remained brand-loyal ever since. This is NOT to say that Pentax is "better" than ANY of the other brands out there. I'm simply saying that all the Pentax cameras I've owned have always done what I asked of them and so.... if I have a camera in my hand, it will be a Pentax.

I will not get involved in the nit-picking of all the endless points of contention that are usually way over my head anyway. I just like to shoot my pictures and enjoy the day afield and not let anything spoil it.

Here's a shot taken with a 10.2 MP K2000 using a $13.00 Sears 28mm lens, so you do NOT have to spend thousands of dollars to get an acceptable image!

Pentax didn't get seriously into the DSLR market until much later than others and is trying to find their nitch. They may became a major player in time as they were in film. They are more than capable; remember their 6 X 7 SLR?

Pentax's implementation of it is far better than that of any other manufacturer. Neither Nikon nor Canon uses it in their high end DSLRs.
