Hi, my wife stopped at the local store to talk to the camera guy. He has her believing that she should upgrade from her 70D to the 80D. Now I have no problem upgrading her IF it is beneficial for her. I give her a lot of credit as she joined a camera club and seems to be generally interested in becoming a better photographer. My question is , is there enough upgrades to the 80D to warrant it? I have looked at the specs on the two and half of me says yes and the other half is not sure. So I'm asking your opinion?

Thanks

The 80D has a larger sensor, better focusing, and a larger buffer for shooting in burst mode. I believe it also focus tracks while shooting video that the 70D doesn't. I think it's worth the extra $300 but you will lose a little more than $300 since the 70D is used and you won't get what you paid for it.

From what I've read today on this forum, it would be a nice move for her and the camera club if you don't mind the expense.

Why would you want to upgrade your wife and how would it be beneficial to her?
But Siriusly, (woof, woof), half of you says yes and the other half isn't sure, which isn't a no, so, even you are leaning towards, yes. I'd say, it depends on how much she uses her camera and what she uses it for. I own a 70D and use it often, it's a nice camera. I also own and 80D and really like it, a lot. Next to my Nikon D500, it's my second favorite crop frame DSLR. I use my 80D more that my 7D II. (The 7D II spends a lot of time on a tripod with a big Sigma tele zoom attached, the 80D I use handheld.) The 80D does have newer technology in it, a better image sensor and it is a wee bit faster. If your wife takes a lot of pics, uses the camera often, then she will be even happier with the 80D than she is with the 70D, and we all (those of us who have one) know a happy wife is, well, a happy wife... 8^)

The Video on the 70D does everything the 80D does, maybe not at 60fps, but it tracks faces etc. I have a 70D and I decided to wait until the 6D MKII comes out, and not upgrade right now.

You don't want my opinion because I haven't owned both cameras.

Read comparisons and specs, and decide what features are important to you.

I had a 50D and when the 70D came out there was a significant difference especially in ISO which I needed to shoot nighttime outdoor sports so I bought one. When the 80D came out I looked at it and did not see a significant difference in the 2. Perhaps your needs are different and it offers an advantage but, the camera guy needs to make a living. Is there a particular difficulty that your wife is having that the 80D will solve?
It's been a few years now and about time for Canon to bring out a new model. You might try to see when and what it might offer. If nothing else the 80D will be cheaper then.

Here's a weird one -- how about downgrading from a Sony a7ii to an 80D? I loved my 70D and switched to an a7ii only because of elbow problems and the concept that a lighter camera would be better for me.

I've been thinking about upgrading my 70D to an 80D. The reason for me is that I cannot use WiFi while shooting video on the 70D and the 80D you can. This is important if you want to control the camera using the phone app. This is nice if you have the powered zoom and also allows you to smoothly control the focus point while recording.

As far as still photography goes, other than the improved focussing system I'm not sure there enough of a difference to justify the cost.

Thanks for asking this question as I'm interested in hearing other opinions.

At the end of the day you will not see any image quality improvement. spec's are great but real world you will not see the improvements

Camera manufacturers upgrade their cameras every 2 to 3 years. And this timeline can vary. A lot of times you won't notice a difference unless you need one of the new features, and I'm guessing your wife doesn't need to upgrade yet. It's easy to get caught up in getting the new better model as they come out, and this becomes an obsession of sorts for us really into photography.

What is her current camera not doing for her that she's hoping the 80D would? If you or she cannot answer that question, then don't upgrade.

Her photo group is looking to getting into Time lapse photography, the 70D does not have that feature, the 80D does. That is the main reason for the upgrade.
