The best answer is the one that asks what you will be using it for. All the suggestions are good, but if you shoot bugs and small critters, then you'd want a longer focal length, since a 60 or a 90mm lens will have a short working distance, compared to a 150 or a 180mm lens. Another reality is that the difference between a mediocre macro lens and an outstanding one is not something you are likely to see in practice. They are all pretty darn good, except for the Nikon 40mm F2.8.

Which is the best Macro lens for the price for a Nikon mount.

If you want IQ, likely an old film AI 105mm f4 Micro-Nikkor Prime Lens. I'd recommend that and I'm not even a Nikon shooter, but I know plenty of other old farts that are! Hell, I even use Screw Mount Takumar lenses on my Pentax digital cameras.

You can not get the best lens for the lowest price.

I have the Nikkor Micro 105 2.8 and wouldn't part with it at any price. You get what you pay for.

Also one of the most expensive but it can't be beat. I had a 105 stolen off me many years ago and now I have the Sigma 180 3.5 Macro and love using it but it can get really heavy really fast. Would love to have the new 180 2.8 but it's expensive and I would still have the problem of weight. The 105 is not really that heavy and it's one of the sharpest Macro lenses on the market.

I have the Sigma 180mm f2.8 OS macro + Sigma 1.4 TC and you are right, it does get a little heavy. It is, however, a brilliant bit of kit and enables me to get good shots much further away than any of my previous macro lenses. I love it. I bought a mint condition second hand copy for £800, a new one costs £1300. Here are two shots, the solitary bee is 180mm and the honey bee is 180mm + 1.4 TC. Both shot from a metre + away.

For manual isn't the 105mm MF lens one of the best ever made? I have used one and think it is absolutely flawless for image and build quality. I like AF but if I were using 7XXX or better cameras I would not hesitate to have this incredible lens. They hold value and are in the range of $300-$500 and incredibly well built.

I have the sigma 105 and love it. Bought it used for $350 and it is an incredibly sharp lens. Overlooked at times I believe

There is no "best" They will all deliver as long as your technique is good. What focal length to get depends on what you want to photograph. They all have their pros & cons. You may not even need a macro lens, depending on what you want to photograph. It would help knowing the Nikon model you have as well. I have nine different macro lenses (both AF & MF) with lengths between 55 & 180 mm. I mainly use them for macro as I have other lenses for portraits et al. If you have a base model Nikon, you will be more limited in your choices if you want to retain AF for other purposes.

I got a MN 105/2.8 Ais from ebay (Japan) a couple of years ago for using with a Nikon film and digital cameras and more recently a MN 55/3.5 Ai. The latter one I am using with an M2 ext. ring and K&F Concepts on a Fujifilm x camera. Both are good for macro and crisp on general shooting, but less convenient for general due to the long focus throw etc.

I suggest you ask this question in the Macro Section where members with years of experiences with all the macro lenses will give you knowledgeable advice once they know your purpose for owning a macro lens.

I frequently use my 105/2.8 micro nikor for general shooting on a 810 with no problem.
What did you find inconvenient about it?
