HP controls whether or not you can use refilled cartridges also. Its hit and miss sometimes that a refilled cartridge will work or not. Depending on where you get refilled cartridges from, they may or may not work. I purchased some refilled cartridges from Staples. The black ones worked. One of the color cartridges did not work. I returned it to Staples and they gave me another one. The sales tech said that HP had put a code into their printer updates which gives users an error message saying the ink cartridge is not a compatible ink cartridge. I found this out a number of years ago when I was refilling my own cartridges (these were genuine HP when I bought them new) and they would no longer work after refilling them. I received an incompatible ink cartridge error message after I refilled them. At the time I did not know it was due to an HP update to the printer. Just another method for them to make profits by doing that and charging high prices for ink because they know you need ink to continue printing and you are going to buy it.

That's the reason why they sell the printers so cheaply

Exactly... why spend $100 on a black and a color cartridge when you can get a new inkjet printer for $49.99.

There you go, and pretty soon you will have a garage full of printers. But seriously, I believe they put in ink cartridges that are only one quarter to one half full.

They do upgrade the software periodically.

Upgrade?
I had one editor for over 5 years before I upgraded from v2 to v8,
another from v4 to v14.
I just do simple edits.

Moral of the story; stay away from HP.

A little secret about cheap printers; they soak you to death on the ink. Buy a better quality printer and the ink cartridges are so much better priced. Lexmar and HP are the worst out there that I am aware of.

I can understand the software, but not mechanical items. I wonder what repairs would be needed that would involve working with the software, unless it is reading a status from a communications port.

Most ink cartridges now have computer chips to talk to the printer- ink level, blocked jet, etc.

When you buy a Lexmark ink cartridge, you don't own it. Lexmark has a lawsuit aimed at forbidding other companies to refill their cartridges - since they don't own them.

I just solved that problem. My 4 1/2 year old Canon printer died and I replaced it with a Canon G3200 mega-tank printer. The ink comes in bottles that you use to refill the printer ink tanks. Each bottle costs about the same as an ink cartridge, but holds about 10 times the ink, and costs about the same as a cartridge. They claim up to 6,000 pages from a black ink bottle and 7,000 color pages from the 3 color bottles. It's only a 4 tank printer, but I don't much photo printing, so that isn't an issue for me. The color for non-photo work looks very good. There are 4 different printers in the line, and the price varies depending on the features; the G3200 seemed like the "sweet spot" for my needs, and I'm really happy with it. The printer is now only available direct from Canon.
