Wah, Wah, Wah. lol. Get usted to it, or stay home and spend your money here. Have you seen all this great country?????

That won't work as there is plenty of it going on here as well. Get used to it or choose your ventures carefully so you can be alone.

I’m just completing a month long trip around SE Asia and have just about had it with the throngs of smartphone and tablet snap shooters (not photographers) who clog every venue I visited. Personally, I have two iPhones and three iPads but rarely use them for taking anything other than something interesting like a sign or other local oddity and usually just for my records. I do, however, take the occasional selfie and may have someone take a quick tourist shot of my wife and I in front of something noteworthy. Other than that, I use my Canon 5D III with a long enough lens that I can breach the wall of smartphones in front of me. I do recognize that these “tourist” photographers have just as much right to take shots as I do but it’s the way they take those photos that drives me crazy. Here are my main issues.

1. They must always stand a long way from their subject so that the entire background is included. This means that for some length of time the lane between them is technically closed while the photographer (I hate to use that word) fidgets with the camera and/or the subject goes through several modeling poses so that the shoot can be completed. Inevitably, the shooter and subject change places and repeat the process.

2. With groups, everybody wants every picture taken with their camera which means that the particular location is closed for a while. Maybe someone should invent a selfie-stick that holds 4-6 smartphones so that they can get it done with one click.

3. In order to take a picture with a smartphone or tablet you must raise it well above your head in order to get a clear shot and in most cases a small adjustment with your DSLR will get you around them for your shot. The worst situation is the tablet user when they hoist what appears to be equivalent of a large sign up to take their shot. Sometimes I wish they would turn the tablet on selfie mode so they could see the annoyed people behind them. I attended a few cultural performances (water puppet show, etc.) and was steaming when a lady in front of us with an iPad appeared to want to video the entire performance and who was totally oblivious the attendees behind her.

4. Lastly, selfie-sticks are really annoying because they are not just used for selfies but for all of their photos. They walk around with a phone on a three foot pole and in large crowd it is just not that practical.

We unfortunately live in an age where everybody on the planet owns a device capable of taking pictures and where in the old days only people with actual cameras taking actual photos would be trying to get the perfect shot of something that they deemed important. Oh do I yearn for those days.

Well,I do remember the days that if you wanted a picture you had to have a real camera. Sorry to say, but those people were just as rude and annoying as people today with cell phones.

Some people don't even think about being in the way of someone else who wants a picture. My kids' recital comes to mind. Every parent wants to be in front to snap pictures of THEIR kid. Same thing at graduations.

So, if all those people with picture-taking phones had REAL cameras instead, they would STILL be in your way.

I do have a smart phone but I rarely use it for snapshots.

I DO agree that using a tablet to take a snapshot looks ridiculous!! I was amazed at all the cell phones taking snapshots when I was in Ireland. They came all this way to capture the awesome scenery with a phone? I just shook my head in disbelief!

Hey...why don't you invent the selfie stick for multiple phones. You would make a killing!! This trend isn't going away!

As the OP I'm glad this generated a lot of discussion. I'm also sorry that many of you did not read anything past my "I hate...." title because I never said that I thought I had more rights than the smartphone snappers. I also tried to inject a little humor into what should have become an annoyance (again IMHO) with more serious photographers. I embrace all forms of technology and think it's great that everybody can now capture the wonders of their travel adventures. I always try to be courteous to others while traveling but unfortunately these smartphone snappers are not photographers but merely picture takers and are not always courteous.

Enjoy the crowds at your future photo venues and get there early.

Appreciate your frustration. The advantage I have over many is there are no other people around. I don't visit the tourist spots very often..maybe once a year if it is a location my wife wants to see.

I understand why many of you are upset that people have become dependent on their cell phones for taking pictures, but I find it far more disturbing they can't communicate without them.

I wasn't referring to us living in CT and WA having a conversation over thousands of miles.
It was my failure not to be specific and refer to people I see talking to one another across the table in a restaurant with their phones.

The real problem is that people in general have become incivil and inconsiderate. Each of us can choose to do better.

Is that a civil reply?

One clue or dead giveaway if a person is holding a smart phone in the vertical position to take a photo, when the horizontal position would not only be the best shot. There has got to be some give and take, I have a friend who was shooting a wedding photographer, every time he would compose shots of the family and group shots, the cam phone users were either edging up in front of him, shooting over his shoulder, asking the wedding party to start doing silly poses. He finally told both families, this has to stop, the limos are waiting out side for the trip to the reception, of course at an hourly rate. So if you they would not stop he was not going to take another shot until the cam phone folks stopped. The wedding coordinator told everyone that was one of his staff members or a part of the wedding party, families etc to stop. He completed the shoot, and then went to the reception.
I recently was helping my grandson make a repair on his car, in order to make sure that the parts seller did not sell me the wrong part again, would you read the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number or serial number) to me he said I will just take a phone photo of it and send it to you in instant msg. I told him if you are at the the car you can't be more than a few feet from the number so just read it to me I will write it down.
Every camera or lens that I have has uses or limitations. I know fairly well which camera or lens I will use for a shoot. I do not wish to trust a phone regardless the brand or features to get that "keeper" shot. I had a friend call me, hey can you help me my phone just quit, and I had over 1,700 photo on it. My first question was why do you have that many photos stored on your phone ?
I have seen the people using the steering wheel method of taking videos, or photos on a tablet, frantically rotating their tablets around like they were playing an arcade driving game, not only can the movement harm the quality of the shots especially if they are taking videos. Then I have to think if you only new how much you resemble a one armed wallpaper hanger at work.
If people like the photos that I call instant photos, because they just gotta slam them up to some type of photo sharing or social media so aunt Eloise in Pineapple, AL can see if that is their cup of tea, let them drink it.
I bought own and use quality cameras and lenses so I could take better photos, edit them and get the best possible shots I can.
