I have a Nikon D3300. Currently running around the internet looking for the best software to connect my camera to a laptop or tablet.
Loaded a Nikon app called Nikon wmu and can view my photos on a tablet as I take them, (have a Samsung, not real clear. Need to get an Ipad).
Loaded Digicamcontrol on my computer. Seems like it may work but can only connect via USB, no wifi.
USB provided with camera is real short, (buy a longer cable?)
Looking for suggestions on the best software to connect up. I can see I could chase my tail trying to find the most versatile software.
Always open to the "free" software if it works. Thank you.....

Why not simply remove the SD card from the camera and plug it into the computer. You can get an adapter to plug your card into the tablet, and should you get an iPad, Apple sells an adapter that plugs into the iPad and the SD card plugs into the adapter. I believe I paid $20.00 for mine at Best Buy.

Try CameraRC. It is written specifically for Nikon cameras (not sure about the D3300), is updated and had never failed to work for me (D90) I tried Nikon Camera Control, Lightroom and Capture One - CameraRC simply works.

Looking to view the photo's as I take them and then make camera adjustments as I may need to.
Basically using the larger screens as a "live view" while working.

If you get an iPad, you will lose a lot of connectivity. I don't know how old your Samsung is but my Samsung Note Pro 12.2 tablet has an awesome screen. I too use the WMU and the image is not very clear but that's because you're only getting a preview, not the real image, which would take way too much time to transfer as you look through in real time.

To transfer the pictures to your tablet, you will not be able to read the camera's SD card using the microSD card slot in your tablet. (Note iPads do not have any microSD slots.) The formats are different and removing the microSD card from you tablet all the time is not a good idea. What you could do is get hold of an inexpensive USB OTG cable and either connect the camera's USB cable to the OTG attached to your tablet, or connect an SD card reader to the OTG cable and move the SD card from the camera to the OTG-attached reader.

I have not tried attaching the USB cable from my camera to the OTG cable on my tablet to monitor and take pictures in real time, I'm not sure that would make much difference as you would still get the low quality preview.

You can find the OTG cable here:
https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Micro-USB-Adapter-6-Inch/dp/B00GM0OZ4O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1489762267&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=usb+otg+cable&psc=1

This gadget allows you connect any USB storage device to the tablet and you can read and write to it.

I use ControlMyNikon to work tethered with my Nikon. It's a very good program and relatively inexpensive. You can get a trial on-line I believe.
I bought a USB extender cable at the computer store and it gets me out to 20 feet. I can do stills or video with this setup.

Look into the wireless CamRanger.

I do remote shoots for youth sports clubs and this unit outputs from my camera to my iPAD, which gives me a large screen to look for details. It has a 150' range for wildlife shooting as well. Being wireless there are no tether cables to trip on.

For a WiFi connection on your D3300 you will need to get a Nikon WU-1a adapter. It will let you connect the camera to a smart device or a laptop.

Digicamcontrol (check that you have the latest version) will work just fine with Wifi. I am using Digicamcontrol with both my D7200 with the built-in WiFi and the D3300 with the WU-1a adapter. One thing to remember is that the wireless transfer is not very fast but small jpegs transfer in about one second.

I do photoshoots with the D7200 where the RAW files are stored on the SD card and small jpegs are sent at the same time via WiFi to a laptop with a 52" TV connected to it. Works great and you can see the results almost immediately.

Also, keep spare batteries around for longer shooting sessions because the power requirements of the WU-1 adapter.

I bought a longer cable via Amazon - same software.

I put the Canon connect on my Samsung tablet and can connect and download, take images, select focal points etc., and preview my images on the tablet wirelessly, but of course my camera is WiFi enabled. My kid uses this software which I think is far superior to the Canon. He connects using a USB cable and his phone.

Pay attention to the cable length. The USB specification is 5M (about 16') MAX for a SINGLE unpowered cable, and exceeding that can yield unpredictable and flakey results. If you wish to go longer, make sure to get an active (powered) cable.

I use "EyeFi" sd cards, these will do exactly what you want. When I go out on a shoot the photographs I take are transferred to my tablet or phone on the go so I can view them more or less immediately.
They have recently been taken over by Toshiba and now the app is called "Keenai" but the app still works perfectly for me.
Here are a couple of links:
