I have a Canon 80D. I have the option to use a Canon macro EF 100mm 1:2.8 USM or a Tamron 16-300mm 3.5-6.3 Di II PZD macro. Which lens would be better to use and would extension tubes help? Would a 50mm lens be better?

For me, it would be the Canon 2:8, I have it and it is one of the best macro lens and also a good portrait lens as well.

The 100mm would be better and no tubes would be needed...

I have a 200mm f2.8 G lens that works wonders.

My experience is with Pentax equipment but the following comments should apply to the Canon equipment. Of the lenses you listed, the 100mm Macro would be best and will allow you to be farther from the subject. A Canon 50mm Macro should be cheaper, but will force you to get closer to the subject. But it will provide an improved depth of field.

The Canon 100 2.8 Macro was my first L lens with an old T camera. It is now on it's 3rd camera a 5d4 and I love that lens. I always do the lens corrections in Lightroom and this is the only lens that does not have any changes when you click the boxes; sharp, fast sturdy. Yes, mine has hit the floor a few times.

The Canon 100ml macro of course. For the 80D, the EFS 60 macro would work well also if you have access to one.

The only problem I see with the 100mm lens is that if you want to photograph insects on the flowers the 100mm requires you to be so close that it frequently scares the insect away.

I shoot with a 105mm macro. Look at my Flickr images (insects are my favorite subject). Not an issue as long as you know how to approach them.

Always shoot macros with a macro lens.

I wish to buy at some time in the future a macro lens and a good just-walking-around lens. I am considering the Nikkor 105mm macro and the Nikkor 16-300mm. If I bought the Sigma macro that you were talking about, would that satisfy my requirements for both a macro and a walking around lens?
