It is very hard for the print media to stay in business - it has been a vicious cycle - readership drops, and advertisers pull out. Lately only a few of the big advertisers buy big space - but they know that most people considering buying expensive equipment will either know to head to the major stores or will go to their nearby Best Buy... Probably those hurt the most by the lack of advertising space will be the small tour operators who advertise in the back. Knowing that an operator purchased ad space was somewhat reassuring, right or wrong, that they were financially stable and in it for the long haul. Anyone can build a website.

Well - it will make forums like this one and our local camera clubs that much more valuable for serious photographers!

Since I don't believe a lot of what I read on Wikipedia because anyone can edit a post there, I've sent an email to Bonnier asking if this is indeed true. I'm hoping I get a response soon.

Popular Photography is soliciting subscriptions on the basis of six issues a year. I guess that wasn't enough to survive.
Their adds have dropped substantially in the last few years. I think that they ran a quality magazine. it is a definite loss to all of us.

I am 71 and understand. I don't know if I think it's resting change, rather having knowledge of a era that we hold in fond memory and one that the younger generations have little knowledge of. I belong to a local film group that now includes both young and older members. The younger members are truly interested in film and the senior members provide a connection to the past they want.

That's a shame. I've subscribed off and on since the '60's.

How is it that a market as small as the UK can support at least a dozen photo magazines and we cant support 3 or 4

Just for starters.....IK did a search of camera stores in London and stopped counting after 100.

Popular Photography was the first photo mag to which I ever subscribed and did for many years up to this last issue and Modern as well for most of its life. Hopefully Outdoor Photographer and Shutterbug will be around for a while.

Look at commercial magazines to see what the industry is accepting. Photo mags don't always do that.

Are you sure about that? I just got a renewal offer in the mail.

Most magazine renewal offers are from third parties and some are outright fraudulent and perpetrated by criminals. We keep getting renewal notices for magazines we've never heard of at high prices. I did some backtracking and found a licensed realtor in Michigan that works this mail mill scam using multiple response addresses in various states. On the forums the message was that if you send money you may never get the magazine. My guess is that he subscribes for a few of the respondents at a much lower price than he collects - just so he can avoid prosecution bey demonstrating his "legitimacy". Most never receive anything.
