Eagle catching fish

This eagle came down from a tree right at me to grab this fish. The first few frames of the sequence didn't want to lock focus in AI-servo. This one came out pretty well. It is hard to catch a shot of an eagle fishing, coming right at you. After catching the fish the eagle veered slightly to his right.

Very nice. I might suggest you bring the shadows up so we can see more detail of the eagles catch.

Outstanding catch - you, not the eagle; I'm sure his catch is more ho-hum than yours.

I use a Canon 7D Mark 2 with Canon's 100-400 version 2. I had a 1.4 teleconverter version 3. (I think that is the most recent version. On a sunny day I shoot in shutter priority and set shutter speed to 1/1600 sec. On sunny days I set exposure compensation to -1/3 or -2/3 to avoid blowing out whites. I use auto ISO but limit it to 800 to cut down on noise.
On overcast days I will set exp. comp. to +2/3 - +1 and have gone up to +2 exp . comp. I play around with metering modes but usually shoot evaluative and occasionally go to center weighted. And of course I shoot in AI- servo.

I have tried AV and got some good results. I like to guarantee I have fast enough shutter speed to freeze action. Anymore I usually shoot on sunny days to ensure enough light. If the blinkies go off I sometimes go to 1/2000 but usually just dial down expos. comp. a bit.

I tried bringing up shadows and probably lost some contrast. Of course if I knew what I was doing it could probably come out better. Just something I can play around with.

Great shot!!! Thank you for sharing your settings and equipment. I have been attempting to take some eagle pictures using the same camera and lens combo, minus the teleconverter. Actually, I just order a 1.4 III converter that will be arriving today! I'm hoping the extra reach will help. I've been practicing using manual mode, wanting to keep my shutter speed up. I'm still learning how to use the different case settings and focus points. Can you guys share what you're using? I'm pretty inconsistent with getting sharp photos.
