I have found over the years that your local CraigsList can be useful. I have never had any bad dealings using that site. I have also sold camera bodies on this website. The readers here are knowledgeable and also fair. As far as payment goes, it can be easier and quicker if you are a Pay Pal member. Membership is free and is extremely easy to join. Good luck.

I've never sold any of my gear, but am getting ready for a spring clean up. Can any of our more experienced UHH brothers and sisters advise where, in their experience, good prices could be gotten? I understand condition and age of the gear are key factors. I'm in the NY/NJ metropolitan area. Places such as B&H, Adorama and local camera store are easily accessible. But generally, can one expect better deals at the local shop or the big boys?

Thanks

Look up your equipment items one at a time on ebay and go down the left column until you find a phrase that says SHOW ONLY, under this heading you will click on the box next to SOLD LISTINGS, then refresh. Ebay will then show you what your equipment items sold for on ebay. That will give you a good idea what you could get for these items if you sold them there. Ebay will take 10% BUT, you still get about 50% more than most places will give you in trade, so it is well worth the trouble.

Craigslist is easy if you live in a large city - but make sure you meet any prospective buyers at a public library or some other safe place. You can do an expanded search on Ebay to look only at SOLD items and see what yours have recently sold for.

Look on Ebay for selling to an end user. For re-sellers, take what they offer you.

Read your comments re Craigs List with interest. From your description, you must live in an area where Craigs List transactions are the least of your worries. Bet you have steel bars on all outer doors/windows.
I have been selling on Craigs List for years without any problems. Your suggestions on meetings are right on target. However such common sense precautions apply to most things in life. I have 2 major rules for Craigs List deals.
1. Always speak to the prospective buyer on the phone before meeting. You'd be amazed how you get a sense of who you're dealing with by a 5 minute conversation.
2. Never have them come to your house. I happen to use a local Diner parking lot which is always well populated.
Just one man's opinion

If you do not know what price sell an item for, look on E-Bay. You may need patience and look for a week or more to really get a "feel" for what it is worth. Click on the watch item button for something that matches what you wish to sell, then easy to find out what the winning bid amount ends up at.
To actually sell: E-Bay works but can be complicated for some. Craig's List is OK for very popular items, but specialized camera gear can languish for months, and then you get lowball offers, and very often: scam requests. But if it is Photo related, use this forum to sell it once you have a little idea for what it is worth. No fee's, so simple even a cave-man (or cave- woman) can do it! Paypal is 3%, but make the deal, and build that into your price if need be.

Your best bet is to advertise the gear you want to sell in the b&s forum right here.

I love selling on ebay. When I get rid of something, I just want to get rid of it. First, I check to see what it's been selling for on ebay by checking the "Sold recently" box down the left column. If it's not bringing in enough money, I keep it or donate it. I write a description, take a lot of pictures, and let it ride. About a week later, I get paid. Sometimes, I look around the house just to find something to sell. Before you post your item, box it and figure the cost of shipping and insurance, since that can be expensive. Include the shipping cost in your description. Several times, ebay has told me that my shipping cost is too high, even though that is the actual cost. Shipping has gotten expensive.

I have sold L lenses and cameras on eBay. It's easy and you set the pricing.

I guess it depends on how fast you want to move it. Adorama and KEH offer about 50% of what you could sell it for yourself. Both make it very easy to do business. Sometimes KEH offers a premium of 10%, usually limited to one day only. I sold an A6000 to Adorama once and the price they quoted was so low for a camera with less than 2000 clicks on the shutter and in excellent condition ( their evaluation) so I pushed back at them and they increased the offer to me by a reasonable amount. Doing it over again, I would take my chances on this site or on eBay.

I have bought and sold items right here on UHH. Never a problem. Good buyers and sellers. Always received a fair price, and paid a fair price, with a few bargains, too. Try it.

Most of the pro shooters and great shooters like on this forum use ebay. I have sold on ebay and gotten better prices then anywhere else. Yes 10% to them if sold.

I wrote about this a while back you must be careful on ebay. I sold an Nikon D800 on ebay and received a confirmation that the funds were collected by PayPal.

I shipped the camera out out west and found out latter the email communications were fake from buyer and funds collected with logos etc.

My fault should have checked PayPal funds were really in. And make sure that transaction is valid with them. KEH good company offering bottom prices.

Adorama is going to low ball you. I used to have a great camera store outside phila. that traded stuff at good prices for my trade. I bought my a7s and

some lens that way. I did mention a short time ago that the major companies are releasing cameras so fast that the good used are not getting

the used prices they would have in the past. ebay is good but does not feel responsible for any bogus deals. The ratings and guarantees are good.

Good luck be careful.

Friend of mine who owned a camera store for a long time has moved south and started usedcameraguy.inc.

Mike can be reached at www.usedcameraguy.com. He buys, sells, works on consignment, trades whatever. Has sold some stuff for me since he started.
