My selling has been thru Craigslist (non photo gear), the buy/sell section on this forum, some local photo club members and to KEH. My buying has been thru Craigslist (not local though, too high priced), eBay, KEH, Adorama, B&H, the Buy/sell forum here on UHH and local photographer friends. No selling on eBay other than some Nascar tickets many years ago.

I recently sold some of my extra bodies and older lens on eBay. I first when a looked at what was selling and what the final prices were for the same items I wanted to sell. What I discovered was the lower starting bid got more money in the long run, as the activity started earlier in the 7 day period. So I listed mine with a starting prince of about 25% of what I wanted. I listed the items a day apart, and all items started bidding within a few days. By the 7th day, I was at or above the price I felt was fair and often in the last hour, I had ending bid of at least 25% more than earlier in the day.

I found paying the freight did not make a difference, but I also keep my freight to shipping Priority Mail Flat rate boxes, so it was not much of a factor. In most cases, I posted 12 very detail photo's of every angle and side of the items, as well as of any accessories included. Basically, if you research first the going price trend on eBay of your items, you should get that number, or close to it. Yes, the nail you for a selling and payment fee, but having a sale in the next 7 days and having it out of your bag and into your bank.

The problem with Craigslist is you have total strangers coming to you house or business and sometimes I think I am just been checked out for what I have. The reason I say this is a few years ago, after a craigslist ad ran, and I had several come to my office, I was broke into and similar items to what I advertised were taken. I made the mistake of waling them into the room that had my better stuff. Craigslist also limits you to the local area, and E Bay can be world wide. I sold a Canon 7D body to a guy in England on eBay. I also purchased a body on eBay when I decided I just could not justify the new price but just had to have it.

I've never sold any of my gear, but am getting ready for a spring clean up. Can any of our more experienced UHH brothers and sisters advise where, in their experience, good prices could be gotten? I understand condition and age of the gear are key factors. I'm in the NY/NJ metropolitan area. Places such as B&H, Adorama and local camera store are easily accessible. But generally, can one expect better deals at the local shop or the big boys?

Thanks

If you sell your gear to the dealers (B&H, Adorama, KEH, etc.) it will be easy but you will only get "wholesale" value... probably around 66% to 50% of what you might get if you sold the gear directly yourself. The dealers probably follow used equipment sale prices very closely and will only pay a portion of it because they have to build in some margin for their cost of doing business and a reasonable profit.

If you want to maximize the money from your gear, you'd do best to sell things directly to consumers (via eBay, Craigslist, Amazon, the Classified section here on UUH, etc.) But, of course, that's a lot more work for you and comes with somewhat more risk.

I'd recommend you search eBay for specific items you plan to sell, to get some idea of the range of value. Check "sold" items only and read the listings for any and all details that might effect selling prices (condition, functionality, shipping costs/free shipping offers, etc.) You might do the same for Amazon, but that's a mix of individual sellers and dealers. You also might look at the used equipment on the "big boys" websites, again for the specific items you're planning to sell.

I run my used camera buy and sells pretty much exclusively on eBay close to 20 years now. Only place to get real world values is in their "sold listings" section which lists closed selling prices for 60 days. Buyer/Seller feedback is helpful.

I am not high volume. I pretty much buy on E-bay, Etsy, and the open market. Evaluate, test and resell. Often, what I buy or sell is personal interest and/or personal use for some time. I don't just churn camera's. I am a gear head and use buy/sell as a way to test camera's I was not able to afford when they cost more. Pretty much deal in film. Digital acquisition and reselling is a good way to lose your ass financially.

I'm not looking for your business, but I am telling you that the venue is the best for getting best prices for your goods and good buys if looking.

All the other places must make money on your gear. You can figure that even good, clean gear buy prices at resellers must leave room for profit. Figure on the best high quality gear, 50% of retail value from those buyers would be exceptional. Whereas my cost doing biz through the auction site is about 13% including the Paypal fees. Mo Money Fo Me!!!

I can buy and resell on eBay, and make a profit and often do. I don't do too much on Craigslist as I value my health and well being. Only meet face to face, cash only and in brightly lit populated places, using cash. If you use Craigslist, be sure to read their security page. Best such information on the internet. Craigslist security. And wear Kevlar, when you go to meet a Craigslist B/S'r.

This information is purely for your edification, and only if the money counts for you. If you want to give your stuff away, PM me (Ima Greedy Lil Bastid!), or contact KEH, or your local people.

I have sold plenty of camera gear here and at KEH with no problems. Just list your gear here in the classified or send an email to KEH, they will respond pretty quick.

Luckily, I only live about 30 miles from KEH's facility. No need to send gear in, I just call for an appointment.

Since I didn't want to bother with Craigslist or eBay, I sold to B & H. They gave me a much better offer than two local camera stores. Plus, they paid for shipping, handling and insurance, so there was no hassle.

I either sell my stuff on here, priced between what KEH pays and sells for, or trade it into my local dealer who offers me a fair price and does me lots of favors when I need gear. I've also sold to B&H and Adorama, and on e-Bay. It depends upon the level of nonsense I'm willing to put up with at the time. I often horse-trade my current gear for a newer version if doing that makes sense for me at the time. For example, I traded my D4s for a D810 a while ago. Both my dealer and I were happy, and it just doesn't get better than that. Best of luck.

This is the route I would take. I'm considering selling my Tamron 150-600 to replace it with the Sigma sport or the 2nd generation tamron. I'd definitely start here first.

I thought that PayPal and ebay had procedures to get your money back for situations like this.

Ebay did not back me on the deal D800 it was a total phony deal with fake emails from PayPal made by criminals. Contacted police

in Arizona they couldn't get far in investigation of where it was delivered. Not ebays problem. They State Farm would not make good on

my insurance for theft. This was a couple of years ago on the Nikon D800. Today ebay have more backup for problems.

Just sold a Nikon and Sony lens on ebay for $1150. Took 7 days and pleased with $650 for Nikon 28 300. Buyers of payed promptly

but funds are not collected. I am ready to ship easy with PayPal got shipping labels and payed for shipping on PayPal.

But I will not ship until the funds are collected and I see that on PayPal. They said I am a great seller but it might take up to 21 days before

they clear my payment to PayPal. I am a 100% good on ebay. Haven't used ebay in a while and they want to make sure the lens are good. Strange!!

I believe the funds will clear this week and then I will ship. They do have more backup guarantees for problems now. I had 300 looks and

7 bids on the Sony lens. ebay is still the best place to sell gear. Have always gotten good prices for sale.
