"What metering mode were you using?" Erik H nailed it... Auto ISO is totally dependent on metering mode...

WessoJPEG until you post sample images (with EXIF information) of what you believe is "good" verses "bad" results with Auto ISO no one here can provide authoritative guidance...

Edit: I just reviewed your upload... Center Weight metering is the issue... You should consider changing to Matrix in as Center Weight is highly unreliable for Auto ISO... Others can explain why...

btw, I use Auto ISO on my D7200 for shooting fast action sports if/when the situation predicates (strong direct sunlight in and out of clouds) and it works flawless... Albeit as mentioned above I would never set the ceiling above ISO 6400.

My ISO sensitivity settings for soccer and kayaking are as follows
ISO sensitivity 100
Hi ISO command dial access ON
Auto ISO sensitivity control ON
Maximum sensitivity 6400
Minimum shutter speed 1/1600

I also set my Exposure Metering Mode to Matrix in as Auto ISO is unreliable in Spot or Center Weight Exposure Metering Modes

Who might benefit from Auto ISO? Most likely sports photographers and photojournalists should probably consider using it when facing variable daylight conditions. They have little time for camera settings, but must always get the shot.

Hope this helps WessoJPEG or is at least food for thought...
I wish you well on your journey...

Spot focusing/metering. That's it.
First capture is not on focus. Seems that it was on the far curve. Metering sees light subject.

I'm in manual why does my shutter speed change with each shot. I want it to stay on 250.it will only stay when I turn off Auto ISO. Help.

Thanks Thomas, thought I was in Matrix but exif says I was in center weighted. But why does shutter speed change with each shot. I want it to stay the same thanks for your input.

Set my D7200 on Auto ISO 100 to 24600 Manuel Mode, went outside yesterday to try it.
Sun was out, set on f8, shutter on 250, took a few of the car first two came out great.
Then all of a sudden the next few were completely washed out. Turned The Auto ISO off
and set ISO on200 and every things fine. WTH!!!!!

A convert right in the Tri-State? You learned a valuable lesson and the cost to you was minimal. Auto is auto, sometimes it hits the target and sometime it doesn't. By using 200 you know up front what the results should be. In your case if what you got wasn't what you wanted the camera could be blamed. Now, you're on your own, LOL. The result are yours, and yours alone. (This adds tremendously in the satisfaction department.) Just curious-what ISO readings did your D7200 select?

The ISO in both shots is @ 560, exposure program set to manual, f/8. Center weighted averaging metering. The only change is shutter speed. I'm confused.

Just tried it again and you will see. I set shutter at 250 take the shot and the next one might be 0n 1000. the shutter soeed is moving up and down.

I think you are set to bracket your shots the first is -1ev and the second +1 ev.

So 1 stop under exposed and 1 stop over 1/1000th and 1/250th iso and aperture are constant.

If your shutter speed is changing, you are not in manual exposure mode.

I would try a factory reset.

Yeah, something isn't right. If the ISO is changing and you don't like the results, that's one thing. But with all the other settings as they should be, the ISO should be changing, not the shutter speed. That is, until you reach the limits you set on auto ISO. Not sure whether shutter speed or aperture is prioritized if you're set on Manual as opposed to Aperture or Shutter priority. Anyone know?

Manual is just that, manual, if you set the shutter speed to 1/250, it's supposed to stay there.

nevermind - Blackest nailed it -

No need to do a factory reset - all you need to do is go through all the menus and see what things are set for and which, if any buttons have been reassigned by the previous owner.
