Set my D7200 on Auto ISO 100 to 24600 Manuel Mode, went outside yesterday to try it.
Sun was out, set on f8, shutter on 250, took a few of the car first two came out great.
Then all of a sudden the next few were completely washed out. Turned The Auto ISO off
and set ISO on200 and every things fine. WTH!!!!!

Gotta be more to it than that.

Operator error is almost always the cause for random unexplained changes.

What did you do?

I would retry; auto ISO works fine for me when I am out with golfing buddies, generally set shutter speed to 1/1000 or faster, lens to around F4 and the results have been fine.

What was metering setting? Can you upload examples of each?

I also have 7200 and use auto ISO sometimes and it works really well but I do set the max at 6400.

I agree that the facts are incomplete. As the other topic showed, a great many folks use auto ISO regularly. The only time I change is if I need to over-ride the camera's metering (strong backlighting of subject requiring exposure compensation, wanting brighter snow etc).

I may get some boos from the gallery:

I use manual lenses so I normally shoot Aperture priority. Depending on the light, I preset my ISO accordingly. Low for sunny days, mid for overcast days, high for dark. My camera handles dark with high ISO very well. It also depends if I'm shooting on a tripod or not. I check my shutter speed and adjust accordingly with my exposure compensation. I generally like to shoot at 1/100 sec or higher. That's my goal. I will preset all of my settings before I start shooting. As long as the light is the same, I do not have to worry. I like manual lenses because I set my aperture to f/8 or f/11 which is usually the sharpest. I usually shoot and sell still life's as stock for Adobe Stock so most of my work, I use a tripod and a remote shutter release. Most of my shots are dark with a single source light , usually a candle, so I'm not concerned about shutter speed but for dark shots on a tripod, I use the lowest ISO my camera will go.

I also shoot pound puppies for the PSPCA here in Philly, http://rsmithdigital.com/?p=1888 , using a manual zoom lens (Nikon 35-200mm 1:3.5-4.6). It's a very nice lens for shooting running dogs because the focus ring and zoom ring are the same so i can focus and zoom simultaneously.

No Operator error, had camera on Manuel , lens on F8, shutter on 250, Auto ISO low at 100 high on As high as it goes 24600. Like I said took couple of my car, fine next shots were complete way over exposed. I will try again and post photos, thanks.

What metering mode were you using?

Just tried it again and you will see. I set shutter at 250 take the shot and the next one might be 0n 1000. the shutter soeed is moving up and down.

So it's the shutter speed that is erratic, not the ISO?

If your shutter speed is changing, you are not in manual exposure mode.

Definitely the camera's fault. Don't try to use it again.

Spot focusing/metering. That's it.
First capture is not on focus. Seems that it was on the far curve. Metering sees light subject.
