If you remember January 2016, we had record rainfall. With so much extra water, the swamp did not go through the usual dry down. As a result, the fish lived through the summer, eating, breeding, and becoming more numerous. So now I believe that there are record numbers of fish in the lakes, and as water levels decline, a larger number of fish are available, making this an ideal feeding grounds for the wading birds. Enjoy a long as it lasts.

When I was there friday the upper lettuce lake had a feeding frenzy going on!

Yes, the feeding frenzy as shown in your remarkable photos. We think we have found the barred owl nest, well hidden near the top of an old growth cypress near the North Lettuce Lake. Yesterday I observed an adult owl, maybe the one in your photo, catching fish near the North Lettuce Lake gate, then flying across the lake to feed the young. I will pm you when and if we see the young owlets coming out of the nest. It will be fun to watch, but as far back it is in the cypress, and the fact that new needles are coming on the cypress trees, a good clear photo may be a challenge. It will probably take a long lens (maybe 600), to get a good photo there.

Yes, the feeding frenzy as shown in your remarkab... (show quote)

I used a 150-600 for my photos. I have to return to Tampa today but will be back around the middle of next month. I hope the birding is still good then, I'll keep in touch with you since you'll have the best handle on the birding situation.

I thought you would enjoy this, taken by a fellow volunteer on Saturday, close to their nest by the first water gauge.
