Our cats have never developed the "unroll it" syndrome. They go in to get groomed by Mama, my wife has to keep brushes etc on the counter. When they come in and see me they leave or sit on the scale and stare at me hoping I will reach for the brushes. (Door catch is a little out of line and sometimes doesn't engage so they can get in by pushing on the door.)

My three cats all understand (and await) the word "brush".

Huh? Our three expect us to learn to comprehend "Meow". Though they will respond to a can opener or pop top on their favorite brand of cat food.

There simply is no right or wrong direction, both are right, because its a thing of preference!

Yeah, women seem to prefer having it towards the back, while men seem to prefer it off of the front. Toilet seat up or down? Sit or stand to pee?

I don't care which way it comes off the roll as long as it's there when you need it!

One exception. Not good for unruly cats.

Na, that I can agree on, one should always sit down to pee (not even a question)!

I've always known that.

When we got married I asked the wife which she preferred, she said she didn't give a damn as long as there was a roll. Our cats don't bother it, now the paper towel roll is another story.

I thought it was a right hand left hand issue

Proves nothing. Neither the wall nor the means of hanging it are shown. The drawing could by a "back view" to show detail.

As depicted in the patent illustration, there is no way to tear off sections using one hand. I am a firm believer in the "under" hanging position.

If the roll is mounted ABOVE shoulder level (while sitting) AND on the side of favored hand (right wall for right-handed), it will unspool easier, if it's in front.

If the roll is mounted BELOW shoulder level (as it will almost always be), OR on the opposite side of your favored hand (left wall for right-handed), it will unspool easier if it's behind.

With the paper hanging out of the back, the paper can rub on the wall - OK as long as the wall is not dusty! With the paper hanging out in the room, it doesn't touch anything! For those who are really fussy about their paper, and don't want it touching anything before using it, it makes a slight difference. Otherwise, no big deal!

Excuse me for being graphic, but just what do you think the paper is going to ultimately touch anyway??
