It was the politicians. Never blame the soldier for where he is deployed.
I agree war is to win and needs a reason and once the reason is stated cut the military loose 100% with no restrictions and win with the enemy in the 100% surrender mode with no conditions mood. Sort of like we did with Germany and with Japan except for the emperor who remained but was subordinate to MacArthur.
of course, the politicians have to make up an enemy evil enough, despicable enough, to make peace-loving Americans support a costly war on some tiny country on the other side of the world. Unfortunately, the soldiers are told it's to fight for all that is good in America (and not just to assure US profits)

The thing is, kids joining up now, have only ever seen the military being used as a political or profit making tool. They do it because they swallow the line that it's "the patriotic thing to do".

So the mutants who are intent on taking US out is just someone's illusion ??

You're leaving out Love of Country and the benefits we have as citizens that need to be protected, is why most enlist.

What was the last war fought for those reasons?

I got the impression that the anti Vietnam protests were something of a fashion statement.

Not really.
It was for something real that was actually happening.
Not like the snowflakes of today for fantasy protests that most snowflakes have no idea why they are there except they are getting paid.

The wars we have participated in were either a direct threat against us or one of our allies which indirectly threatens us as a nation.
ISIS and Al Qaeda are at the top of the list right now as direct threats. And that encompasses the recent Mid East wars going back to 1990.
In 1980 I was on my way to Iran to extract the hostages that were being held from our embassy office. But our military was not equipped to engage anyone in a desert setting and resulted in loss of equipment and troops which aborted the mission.
Our mission in Grenada, which I was on standby for, was aiding an ally that was being invaded much like Kuwait.
In 1983 our embassy was bombed by terrorists in Beirut during their civil war which got us involved there.
Vietnam is still a bit of a mystery as to what our role was there.
It was pretty obvious what WW2 was about.

the total monstrosity of this act makes you react much more than say 200,000 American's dying of emphysema every year due to air pollution....dramatic, ghastly, terrorism becomes your priority way out of proportion to the actual threat, and actual threats from other directions.
that is what makes terrorism successful against a media-saturated populace. 50 Americans killed in terrorist attacks in the last 15 years and it's our number 1 priority.

What do these 200,000 American's dying of emphysema have to do with this. What is the cause of the emphysema? Smoking? That is a choice they made. Not my problem.

ISIS and Al Qaeda aren't countries, they're criminal bands. But do you think they'd be a threat, if we weren't over there? The only reason we're in the Middle East, is to ensure a cheap supply of oil. Islamic terrorist groups, are just as active in parts of Africa, but they have no oil.
