I may initiate a follow up thread for use of filters for protection.

Any Nikon FX lens will fit any Nikon DX body. It will only effect a magnification of the lens. So that 70-200 lens will become a 105 to 300 mm f4 lens on a DX body. That lens is a very nice lens but will not allow you to use any wider view than 105 mm. So you will be limited as to coverage goes but you can always add an additional zoom lens to fix that. Say a 18-200 vrII DX lens would give you coverage from 24mm to 300 mm. This lens is more of a all purpose lens than the 70-200. But, if she wants to do portrait work the 70-200 lens would be great or a nice wildlife lens. Good luck.

The only thing that changes using an FX lens on a DX body is the "Field of View" . The focal length of the lens mounted does not change. A 50 mm lens does not become a 75 mm lens. There is no magnification of the subject . It does not bring the subject closer, it just crops the image circle.

If this is 'can she live with that' that surprises you, the zoom becomes quite powerful and there is a need to step back quite a bit when there a 'wider capture' is needed. ... The angle will still be very narrow and the perspective different from the original value...

An fX lens gives exactly the same fov (field of view) as a dx. For a FX lens or a DX lens you always multiply (1.5 Nikon) for the equivalent MM on a dx camera body.

So, FX lens on a DX body...OK
But a DX Lens on a FX body....Not a good idea

Actually, on my D810, there is a DX setting so I can use a DX lens just like a DX camera would.

Nearly all Nikon lenses made after 1984 (I think) will work on any current Nikon Fx or Dx camera. However, auto focus, and other features may not work. But since the D7200 has the focus motor built into the body, if it works on an FX it SHOULD work on that DX (completely).

Go for it. She will notice a significant difference in quality and sharpness.

I have a D300 and wanted to go full frame but the only FX lens I had was the f1.4 50mm prime. I decided to go for the lenses before I bought the body and once I put the 24 - 70 f2.8 on, it stayed on and became my walk around lens. I followed this with the 70 - 200 f2.8 before I bought my D800.

In my opinion, it is a move in the right direction. As well as the difference in lens quality she will have have the lenses to fit her full frame body when she can afford one.

Alan.

It was released in 2012, and there is no magnification. It reduces the angle of view to be similar to a lens that is 1.5x longer in focal length. But it is still a 70-200 F4. If you want an increase in magnification, you'd need to use a tele extender.

I would have thought you understood that.

Since you are into splitting hairs, Gene, the lens does not reduce the angle of view. The angle of view of the lens is unchanged. What changes is the size of the sensor, which is smaller in the dx than the fx, and only uses the central portion of the light image projected by the lens. The apparent magnification results from the sensor only being able to receive the central portion of the cone of light transmitted by the lens, which, because it is made of glass remains always a 70 - 200 with its angles of view predetermined by its architecture.

This is the first time I hear of a FX lens adjusting to a DX body. Care to provide a link?
