100-400L w/1.4 vs. 150-600 w/o extender
My wife and I have an upcoming trip to South Africa for a safari. I'd like to rent a lens for the trip and am considering either the Canon 100-400II with 1.4 extender or the Tamron or Sigma 150-600 without an extender. I've read a lot of comments and seen examples of shots with all three and would be interested in comments from any hoggers who have actually had experience that allowed them to compare the results. I should emphasize that I would be using the lens hand-held as opposed to on a tripod and under varying light conditions, including low light early morning and evening. I'm using a Canon 5DII. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Your 5DII cannot drive the AF with a combined f/8 configuration resulting from the use of the 1.4x. It would seem the Canon equipment is not an option for this trip and this camera body.
Well that pretty much scales back my possible choices. I had no idea. Thank you very much!

The 150-600's are clearly your best choice for this. Just be sure to properly AF tune the lens to your camera before the trip as proper focus is super critical with these ultra long telephoto lenses due to their very shallow DOF.
If I may had my bit, look at sigma's150-600 sport and monopod combo for it's on the heavy side.
I don't know much about the Tamron offerings but I own both Sigma 150-600 models and the Canon 100-400L II and the 1.4 III teleconverter plus the Sigma 1401 teleconverter and Sigma 2.0 teleconverter.
My Sigma 150-600 Contemporary is fairly light and easy to use hand held. My Sigma 150-600 Sport is fairly heavy and depending on ones age and physical strength, may be difficult to use hand help, especially for any length of time.
My EF 100-400 with the 1.4 teleconverter is fairly light and quite easy to use hand held.
The area you are touring is fairly hot and dusty, not ideal conditions for the Sigma Contemporary model but not a concern for either the Canon or Sigma Sport lenses.
The way I see it, you are limited by the older out dated technology of your Camera body. If you are planning on leasing a lens maybe you should consider leasing a newer body as well and going with the EF 100-400L II and 1.4 III teleconverter, regardless of what anyone says, it is the better lens choice.

Will definitely do that. Thanks! Do you have a preference between the two?

A monopod might be possible, but on our first safari in East Africa it would not have been because of the type of vehicles used.
I almost wish that my 5DII would die, giving me an excuse to buy the 5DIV, but it's been a terrific workhorse and despite its limitations a great camera for most of my applications--primarily landscape and travel.

Wind, you can buy the 100-400 mkl for fairly cheap now.
You can add the 1.4 to it and "tape the pins" and yes, it WILL auto focus with your 5ll.
I did just that for the 5 years I used my 5ll and can show you shot after shot taken doing that.
And you might find you don't even need the 1.4!
Then sell the lens when you return for what you paid for it, and no rental fees!
Your choice!

It may not AF but it should MF not a better solution but one available

Interesting take on the issue. Food for thought. Thanks!

Since you're renting, I'd go for the 150 - 600mm.

The v1 of the 100-400 is not built to stand up to the dust you'll encounter on your trip!
