We live close to the border to Mexico. Lots of people go there for dental work. My wife got a crown and root canal for 900.00 with only 3 day wait.

Don't knock our National Health Service. The maximum you can pay is £233.70 (about $290). BUT if you go private, then the sky's the limit (like you, but not that bad).

My brother just got an appointment first week in April to have all of his teeth removed, temp plates for a few months,I believe 4 implants to anchor the 2 plates to. He is 55.

$48,000.

I'll do soup and hash first...

I could use some dental work myself but the price scares the hell out of me. Thousands of dollars is not possible for me when it comes to this work. I've decided to do without.

Tough decision for many. Personally I would seek other options. Some will argue, but I feel that a lot of dental work is truly a form of exploitation.

Definitely switch dentists. Sadly, when offices get that big, they lose sight of how they were able to get that big. Patients don't matter anymore, profits do. The last big group I worked for had a policy of never 'filling' teeth, they would only crown them. Way more money in selling a patient a crown (with or without a root canal), then using a filling or pulling the tooth. I do not, however, encourage him to pull it himself. It is harder than you think!

Definitely! What should have been a simple single payer plan was politisized into an expensive jumble that no one can understand. insurance companies are collecting thousands a year for "insurance" with several thousand dollars in deductible. It's healthcare designed by a few hundred politicians to benefit the insurance companies.

You are absolutely right, insurance companies rule the world!

Too bad you don't live in the Minneapolis area. My dentist and a couple of other dentists I know here would have already fixed the problem. Emergencies are part of what they plan for. Like you suggest, a good dentist who works fast can work in an emergency between other appointments. I wish I could send my dentist your way!

Thanks. I've often had to wait in my doctor's office because he was tending to an emergency. I guess dental emergencies aren't a real thing.

No, I don't mean an actual U. S. state, but the condition of the medical business. My son lost a large filling in a molar a few days ago, and it's very painful. He was able to get to the dentist for a "quick look." As they always seem to say, "Root canal, $1,900." That was out of the question, so he wants to have it pulled. Their "tooth puller" is there only on Wednesdays, so he has to wait from Tuesday this week till next Wednesday afternoon to have it pulled. This is a very large practice with about a dozen rooms set up for dentistry. I guess they need more dentists to fill those rooms. I can never make an appointment for a cleaning and checkup because they're always booked up months in advance. It's time to switch dentists.

Calling around, no other dentist can do anything but look at the tooth. You'd think they would be able to fit a painful emergency into their schedule. It's not like they'd be working for free or doing him a favor. They'd be getting a couple hundred dollars for a few minutes work.

Hopefully, that's my last rant for the day.

It's becoming all to common, so may lack compassion, but love money.

Don't get me started... Dentistry is a business, not a service. After my bro-in-law retired (my only dentist for the last 35 years), I need an implant. So, I go to the dentist that he recommended to me and he quotes me $6500.00. (My bro-in- law charged me $2400.00 for my other implant). Anyway, I say OK. I get whisked away to an "office manager", she looks it over and says, "you need a 3D scan, bite wing x-ray and need to be scheduled for cleanings every 4 months...AND I see your first appointment is scheduled for 2 hours.. any appointment 2 hours and over needs to be paid in advance." So I pay the $2500.00 in advance and then she tells me that my appointment is not for another 4 weeks! Great! I said "I have never paid in advance, can't the Dr. schedule it for 1 hour and 59 minutes"? She said "we have policies". I said I need to find a dentist that is more interested in medicine, than a business machine". She said " It seems to work", and I said "yes, it works for you". So, I have them refund the credit card and I left. Proceeded to find a small office with very nice staff. Dentistry is a business, it is not medicine.

You chose well. I had a root canal about two years ago and it lasted about a year and had to be pulled. Dentists can be very creative in their excuses as to why something didn't work. Lotsa money waisted. Now I have a implant in its place and it working fine.
