These three images are from a recent trip to France. They are from the American Cemetery at Omaha Beach, a very meaningful part of our trip.

Beautiful images of a both chilling and inspirational place.

My father was a sailor on a battleship shelling the coast from off of Utah beach. He left a journal behind. I've transcribed it to a .pdf and email it to anyone that might be interested.

Thank you for posting these pictures. I will never make it there in person. I was born 18 days later. I heard a lot about the war as a lad. I remember, you could buy a military Harley Davidson, for around three hundred dollars. My grandfather bought a military jeep, cheep. We used it mostly to pull implements on the farm. We too poor for a good tractor.

Nice captures. My dad was in the second wave there. American heroes one and all.

We were there 5 years ago. It is too bad that more Americans do not get to visit Normandy. It is a grim and beautiful reminder of what America is about, and what it has done for the world.

Four people have sent me a message, including their email address, for a copy of my Dad's pocket journal written during the invasion.

Although he is not buried in Normandy, we now think he may have been mortally wounded. Based on current knowledge of PTSD, it appears he tried to wash it away with booze. Acute alcohol abuse killed him about 20 years later.

Anybody else want a copy of a journal written by a young, bright drafted sailor taking part in the invasion?

Powerful images of a place where so many were lost, but so much was gained. We should never forget.
