A friend of mine had over 300000 on his Canon 7D when it finally died. It would have cost more to have it fixed than it was worth so he bought a new camera.

A new shutter box is around $400 to $500 i believe which would be cheaper than any new camera of that quality. I think your friend just decided he's rather invest that money into something newer.

So, on average, you have taken roughly 500 photos per day for the last two years? Or, another way of looking at it... a little over 40 shots per hour for every daylight hour the past two years?

It's not impossible, of course... But I'm kinda suspicious of that shutter count. I shoot a lot... and take between 25,000 and 50,000 images per year. So if you have actually shot more than 3X that much, I'm impressed and hope you got some great shots... odds are that you would.

Maybe you should do a rough double-check by counting the image files on your computer or wherever you store them.
So, on average, you have taken roughly 500 photos ... (show quote)

Take daylight out of the mix and it's 20+ images per hour. If his numbers are correct, he took on average 1+ shots every 3 minutes, 24 hours a day, for 2 years. Maybe he takes a lot of sports in high speed mode, but 380,000 shutter actuations in two years is what you might expect from a professional sports photographer.

But the 7D in good shape is/was selling used for about $450. That is why he felt it wasn't worth repairing. On the other hand, when I dropped my 5D Mark III and it cost me $800 to have fixed, it was worth it. They were selling used for more than $2000 at the time. A couple years later I sold it for $1500. But to invest $500 into a camera body that is only worth $300 is not a smart investment. His 7D body was not anything close to pristine.

I understand. It's a valid decision for him. I have a 7D Mark II. It's almost two years old with 60k shots on the shutter, but it is in like new condition. If it remains in good shape and problem free, and the shutter fails in a few years, I personally would invest the money to repair it. I love and know this camera inside out and a replacement would probably cost 4 to 5 times more than it would cost to fix it.

Gotta admit ya got balls fella! Most would never own up to knowing someone who drives a Prius. Does he wear white socks with dark colored trousers?

I thought of getting a Prius, but the payback vs my Honda Fit would take too long, if it every evened out.

I hear that. I have the 7D Mark II also and love it. It really has many improvements over the original 7D. What a camera. The 7D was great too but the value really dropped when the 7D II was introduced. If my new 7D needed fixing I'd get an estimate and then make a decision. I am a Gold member of Canon CPS and get a 20% discount on parts and labor if repairs are needed. So I'd see how much the repair is verses a used 7D mark II. They are probably selling for under a grand now days.

Yep. I know you have a 7D2. It's come up in lots of previous threads. Didn't know you were a CPS Gold member though.

Back when, I used to photo for a newspaper. They provided D2H cameras. The shutters would last only 35,000 photos, give or take a few, which was maybe a year of use. Nikon realized that the film cameras could get by with that but not digital! With digital we spray and shoot Now the shutters go, go and go on for hundred of thousands.

Here is a way to cut way back on the use of your D7200, buy the D500. You'll toss that 7200 aside and really enjoy digital photography.

Life Magazine called it a first --- the only car ever to start rusting on the showroom floor!

My manager had one. Traded a Caddy for it. He kept it ten years, until the driveshaft rusted through...

Oh yeah? Remember the Chevy Vega?

My neighbor in the house kittycorner to mine has one and it's beautiful! The engine makes music to my ears, he has two full sets of Crager mag wheels for it (one set for the drags and the other for the street). Oh yeh! There are also a couple of extra V/8 engines for it too They only put out about 550 - 600 horse power hence the music to my 👂!
