I've been a member for a relatively short period of time but I have been an enthusiastic reader of numerous posts and links. There seems to be a wealth of information on this site, from all walks of photography.

I consider myself an amateur and have no ambition to join those in the professional ranks, but never want to stop learning. My question, which is very broad I'll admit, is what is most important to you? Is it having the best equipment, the perfect scene/light/ subject, perfecting settings, having your camera with you in case, or is something as simple (as it is to me) just to be with your camera and capturing a keeper shot?

Thank you.

Welcome snf! If you haven't had a chance to explore UHH's specialty forums, click on "all sections" at bottom of the page.

I'm a bit similar to you in my interests: love being out in nature, exploring the countryside, and I love to capture moods with light and weather. An article I saw last year really spoke to me: "What's Important in a photograph, and what isn't." Four of the list of seven: emotion, light composition, creativity.

I do photography for myself - never had any interest in attempting to sell anything - if someone else enjoys my vision, that is a great gift indeed.

I enjoy many areas using both digital and analog cameras. When shooting film I develop my own in a daylight tank if it is b/w and then digitally scan it. If the film is either color slide or color negative film, I send it out for processing but also scan it into digital with an Epson film scanner when I get it back.

Interesting... for me it's none of these. I enjoy a walk in the woods, or on the beach. I guess I learned this fishing: a bad day fishing is pretty much better than any other day....

snf, welcome to the Hog!
It's pretty hard for me to pick a priority because everything's so intertwined that it's always close to a tie!!!
BUT, if I have to qualify that tie, here it is:
I'll say always have the best equipment you can have.
Next is education. Education is what will allow you to maximize that illusive perfect scene. The knowledge of what to capture and in what way.
The best equipment is the most versatile and give you a more fighting chance of capturing your perfect objective.
Your image will NEVER be better than the best file you can produce.
Nothing can compensate a for a small amount of blur or OOF, and good equipment will help you with that.
But all is for naught, if you are not having fun!! Even if you shoot professionally, if your job is not fun, your doing the wrong job!!!
Again, welcome!

Like you, I am a devoted amateur. So for me the most important thing is having fun. I really enjoy watching birds but never wanted to be considered a birder. I don't care what they are called, just so they show up. I started years ago carrying a camera. Birders stayed away, but photographers would strike up a conversation. More fun. Here at the Hog I have started to explore other avenues, because people seem to be having a lot of fun with them.

I like equipment, I like software, but mostly I have fun with the subjects.

I've been fascinated by photography and photographic equipment since I was a young teen. My passions growing up were photography, motorcycles and high tech race cars/motor sports. I was the one in the group who always had a camera handy. I've always tried to have the best gear I could afford and am a firm believer in practice, practice, practice. I enjoy just about all types of photography, mainly because I enjoy photography. Over the years I've used and owned different types of cameras but now all I use is mainly 35mm DSLR'S and the occasional bridge camera. Although I have done several paid jobs over the years, I'm not a PRO, I'm an enthusiast. I shoot both Canon and Nikon and have a body for just about any situation. I enjoy learning technique and technology and applying what I've learned to my hobby. I enjoy being out in nature and seeing things the average person does not. I enjoy recording moments in time. I enjoy time-lapse projects. I enjoy mixing my passion for photography with my interest in floriculture. I enjoy having fun...

I shoot just because I want to. I am shooting to my level of talent. it has improved some, but not to the level of many here. i'm ok with that and don't let it interfere with my fun.

For me it is a day out followed by a night or following day editing. I travel by car a 100 miles or so to a mountain biking event in our highlands, borders or North England. I walk the MTB trails and take 100s and sometimes 1000s of pics. The weather can be dry, windy, wet, snowy, foggy, sunny, I dress accordingly and have a lenscoat for my camera in wet or snowy conditions. I use a monopod for a very long lens and as a walking stick in steep terrain. Sometimes I even stay in a B&B if the vent is too far or is over a few days. Once home I edit the pics down to acceptable choices and batch process and review and further refine the pic choice and/or edit. I then upload to a website to offer them for sale to the race competitors. The validation comes when a pic is bought. It pays for my hobby. I also photograph snow sports (even more demanding) and canoeing and I also do some personal stuff for a club to broaden my experience so I am not in a rut!

For me, the intense rush in that moment when the wildlife presents and all the prep kicks in.

I shoot for fun primarily, mainly outdoor and architecture. I used to enter contests at work and sell my own greeting cards, but never to pay the bills. Photography and music are my main loves, along with reading and cooking. They all help me to escape it all and relax.
