Hello to all hoggers! I read the posts all the time and find much of the advise very helpful, so thanks for everyone's input. This is my first post. I've been using DSLR equipment for almost 10 years, mostly Canon. Recently, I dug out my Canon AE-1 Program equipment that I have used since the early 80s, 2 cameras and several lenses, and I got the bug to give them a try. I haven't used them since 2003. I have no idea what film is available, i.e., manufacturers and type. I would appreciate recommendations on print film for both color and black and white. Also, recommendations on sources for developing and printing. Thanks for your help!

For black and white film, I am partial to Ilford FP4. I do not shoot color print. For color transparency I use Fuji Velvia.

Welcome aboard!
I still shoot film as well as digital, although, with film I only shoot b&w. For that I use Ilford HP5 400 ISO and Kodak Tri-x 400. I heard that Kodak is bringing Ecktachrome back. You may want to look into that.

Oh, I get mine at a local lab. If you don't have this option, you can order from B&H.

What else? Tri-X of course (and HP5) for B&W. Fuji Velvia and NPS for MF color.

Well, you won't see Kodachrome, but you will see (shopping online, like BHvideophoto.com.) films of the old speeds--they say they have finer grain than the older ones did. I never liked fast film in 35mm, but it is still popular. I liked 125 ISO b/w best in any format, in every way. I just have to have a tripod and use it for smallish apertures and sluggish shutter speeds. Find what you used to like best, in the latest versions (Ilford never changed, I think), using film speed as your guide.

LV, welcome to the Hog!
I too use Ilford HP5.
Also when I print I use Ilford MG lV, if you need a B&W paper.
I also stopped using my old analogue camera and bought a Canon EOS 1n so that I could use all my EOS lenses!
Now that's a real ride!!! LoL

Most of my work with film is B&W using:

Ilford Delta ISO-100 or ISO-400
Kodak TMAX ISO-100 or ISO-400
Fuji Neopan ISO-400

Color may have a 'look' but I haven't found many films / images that have what I'm looking for.

Kodak EXTRA ISO-100 - this film is very staturated and great for "things" while giving a redish color to skin making people look more than a little drunk
Kodak Portra ISO-160

You can mail order from B&H, KEH or Amazon.

For 35mm, I shoot mostly handheld. So, my choice is Ilford Delta 400. For color, I'd choose any of the Fujifilm products.

Kodak Portra 400 is excellent and also converts to black and white digitally very well. For black and white, Tri-X is like the "rock" of films.

My preferences are out dated, but back when I was still shooting film I switched from a second generation Kodak user, to using Fuji exclusively.

Even when my SLR died, I bought Fiji disposables until I could afford to replace the camera!

The quality of the colors that I got from the Fuji films couldn't be matched by what Kodak was producing at the time.

Of course I was encouraged to switch by my mentor and cousin who is a published professional photographer. She had made the switch several years earlier! It was common for her to travel with several bricks of film on her photographic safaris and international photo shoots (mostly slide film) before she was dragged kicking and screaming into the digital age! She's never looked back since making the switch to DSLR equipment!
