I never mind a sales person recommending something to me, but I really resent a sales person telling me what I need. When I go into a store, I've already got some idea of what I want, so most of the time I'm looking for confirmation before I hand over my money.

I really wanted to love the Olympus.
The build quality is fantastic, lenses are great too.
Love the size and the IBIS is freaking amazing!

Even with extensive reading, I could not get my head wrapped around the Olympus menu system.
I found the Fuji so intuitive, I didn't even open the manual for a month.

Try before you buy.
They are both great options.

Me, too. Much more intuitive than any of the Sony ILMC's. (but, still love my Sony's)

I have both the original Olympus EM-5. The camera in not intuitive. I studied the menu system. I switched to Fuji. The dials and the feel of the Fuji are more like a 35mm film camera. You could actually pick it up and use it without reading the manual. Both camera systems take good photos. I like the B&W simulation in the fuji. The X-Pro 2 and the X-T2 are very highly rated and their sensors are bigger than the m4/3. You really need to handle the cameras and see which feels better and don't forget the Sony is also highly regarded.

Had finally decided to trade my Canon gear for the new Olympus 1 ii. Local camera store (Midwest Photo Exchange) employee tried to steer me away from Olympus to a Fujifilm equivalent. Getting older and wanted to downsize. I had Only OM1 in the past, and liked their stuff. I like the new Pro series lenses. Didn't buy anything that day because the sales guy was so negative. That day he lost a $3500.00 sale. Opinions?

I have dealt with Midwest Photo Exchange since they opened maybe 30 yrs ago? I always found them to be honest and fair. I know the owners would not "push" a customer away from what suites their needs best. BUT your particular salesman may have his own reasons for being pushy. Maybe the salesman is a Fuji fanatic? Similar to the way Canon or Nikon long time users feel about their personal favorites? Would you consider going back there, and talk to a different salesperson, or ask for Jim, one of the owners. But be prepared to wait as Jim is quite popular. He is honest as they come. Tell him about your experience there and hear what he has to say. A business owner wants honest feedback so he can keep his business strong! Jim will listen and give you the benefit of his considerable experience. Then make your decision about both Midwest and the camera for you.
Please private me and I will tell you more?

the tools available today to do the research before you enter the camera store are endless. i got to the point where I must have looked at hundreds of forums and websites comparing one brand against another and eventually the day arrived. you're going to have to pull the trigger and live with the decision. long story short ... in the transition from ff canon .... fuji won. no looking back.. love the fuji gear

As you have previous experience with Olympus cameras I would stay with that brand.

If you want to downsize the max, consider buying either Olympus or Panasonic. I know the menus for the Olympus are harder to get use to but not impossible. Panasonic's menu system is probably the easier of the two. Olympus tends to picture oriented while Panasonic tends to be video oriented. Both have still and video functionality. Most of the lens are totally interchangable with most of the functionality, if not all, retained. If you don't feel like downsizing to the max, then Fuji or Sony might make some sense. But both the new Olympus E-M1mrII and the soon to be GH5 are optimized to take on all the much larger sensored APS-Cs and FF cameras. Personally, I think it comes down to just how far do you really want to downsize.

Either way, you've got a winner! I own the Fuji X-t2 and it's an amazing piece of work, but I know nothing about Olympus. All I know is that many 'Hoggers swear by them (as opposed to at them....)

The salesperson is obviously extremely enthusiastic about the Fuji, as are the folks at my local shop. However, your desire is the bottom line. They should have presented both options and let you decide.

I spent most of my working life as a salesman selling things that cost up to near a million. The salesmans job is NOT to talk you into his way of thinking. His job is NOT to pick out what he thinks you want. His job is to help you learn the answers to your questions. Salesman are supposed to be like teachers or tutors. After you have learned enough that you understand the differences and all confusion is gone, they YOU decide where your money goes.

Get a different salesman or camera store!

Although, the recommendations of a good, local salesman is the reason often given to patronize your local camera store.

Fujifilm has been making some excellent cameras that have been getting great reviews. Try some comparisons and reviews of both cameras.

Read comparisons and specs, and decide what features are important to you.

I have the Nikon D810, last night I used it to do some macro work, boy it is heavy after using the new Fuji XT2, which I am in love with, the picture quality is just sooo good and it is lightweight which is now making me use it more and more, a learning curve it is from D810 (I do love this camera to bits also being FF)

I purchased a secondhand Fuji from some one on the HOG first and I was hooked, it was the way I felt was the most useful to see if I liked the Fuji system. A lot of my colleagues love the Olly so it is a question of choice at the end of the day, but I found buying secondhand to start with was the way to go. I sold it recently and got nearly the same for it as the initial purchase price.

Food for thought.

It is unfortunate that many salesmen tend to do things like that. Or they get a better promotion selling the system they recommend or they simply favor one camera over the other.
If you have used Olympus in the past and as you say you are satisfied with their performance keep on using them. Their cameras are of excellent quality and so are their lenses.
Yes, the professional series have all awesome optics.

Unless the salesperson was the boss/owner, ask to talk to one. Bring a couple of blank SD cards and try out both cameras. Go to lunch and check out the results and make your decision. The ability to actually make an informed decision on what is right for you is why having a sample to use is a store's big advantage.

First, I am a customer there too, we just moved to Ohio about a year ago. We should meet up!

Secondly, I have had the same experience there, each salesperson pushes their preferences, but i do think it comes from a place of authentically wanting to help the customers. Still it is off-putting at times, especially when you are looking to invest significant ducats in your purchase.

Thirdly I am in the very same question Olympus or Fuji. I love the Olympus size, weight, build quality, IBIS (YAY!), lens lineup, etc, but am concerned about IQ in low light shooting which I have to do a good bit of. The Fuji has the best IQ of any cameras I have seen (to me, a very personal thing), fabulous build quality, and as of the X-T2 is competing for best in class auto-focus, they have great glass also. Depending upon your needs I think you would be fine in either system, but IBIS is really hard to turn away from for me. If I wasn't a school teacher (in the Arts no less!) I think would buy an Olympus Om-D E-M1ii even over the Fuji because of the combination of size and IBIS. But, as I am a school teacher I will probably have to wait for the Fuji X-T20 which will be lovely for personal use, but not really be enough camera for my needs at school. ah well. Hope this is useful.

You did the right thing. I sold camera equipment in college and when the customer came in with what they wanted in mind I respected that. My job then was to expound how they needed a lens hood, cleaning kit a better neck strap or an additional lens. Never high pressure but asking if they had ever looked through a wide angle lens or a telephoto zoom lens. Let them play with it. Not a sale then all the time but 90% about came back. Also they were appreciative that I didn't try switching them. Won a lot of repeat customers that way. I even got letters from them with gifts from all over the world as they traveled saying thank you for helping them in a kind, intelligent, knowledgeable but not boringly technical and professional manner.
