You will get more enjoyment out of your camera if you systematically go through the manual with the camera in your hands and try everything, even stuff you never plan to use. Keep the diagrams of the camera handy so you are not confused by terminology. You may not remember everything you go through but, for future use, you will know that the information is in there and eventually you will have a good idea of where to find it. Its a little bit of drudgery for a lifetime of confident enjoyment. Happy shooting!

Thanks for the snide response.

Don't be upset. You'll find here that there are many disciples of "first and foremost, read the manual", aka "RTFM", here. Frankly, I sometimes have to ask questions about things I have read in the manual. Manuals sometimes get so technical they're hard to decipher, and often assume a level of familiarity with photography or terminology that are beyond the reader's understanding.

True. Though there have been times that I would have been unable to find the needed information in the manual because I was ignorant of the relevant terminology. For example, does "large tilting button"= multi selector dial?

You gotta point there.

Best laugh of the day so far! Many thanks!!

I'm a big believer in RTFM, and I come form the days when manuals often had a white page with "THIS PAGE IS INTENTIONALLY LEFT BLANK" written on it.

Worse of course is when you get "THIS MIND IS INTENTIONALLY LEFT BLANK."

Cheers!

Looks like I should print off an online manual. Haven't done that, yet.

Or just download and print pages if/as needed. Or buy one online. Ebay or Amazon likely would have them. I would never print out my 400+ page manual myself, but that's just me.

Well, you do not know how to use internet if you pay for something that is free... On the manufacturer web site!!!

As to print the whole thing??? I no see why would anyone print one page when you can read the stuff on line or off line after download. On that aspect I am with you.

There are some who prefer hardcopy to reading online. Makes it easier to take with you, not to mention tab for quick reference.

P.S. Nothing is free. There is a cost to everything. At the very least, what appears free costs time. Which is really the most expensive commodity.

Cost? You have to buy the camera to find any use for a manual.

If you think your time is so precious as being a cost... Why do you even bother to read this thread?

The rest is well... Cost of connection? Go next to a 'hot spot', sit on your car and use the connection... Yes you have to pay for your phone/computer/car...

Your notion of cost is not mine.

You are correct, many like hard copy. Since there is often no manual it is cost effective to get a book about your camera of get it from your local library, if available.

Tab for quick reference are available in electronic form so, not a hard copy 'selling point'.

I've been using a D810 for a few months and feel I have it mostly under control!!! However, one problem has eluded solution. When I take a picture and view it on the camera's display, the data sheet is plastered right over the photo, obscuring the picture. I've tried lots of things but I have not eliminated this nuisance. Can someone enlighten me? Thanks.

HI rmm0605,

I have a D800, most likely very similar to your model. I think you might be referring to something called "Photo Information." This is an option in the menu where you can check boxes to set the kind of information you want to see displayed with your photos. I have included a page from the Nikon PDF manual. Go to the Nikon website and download the PDF and go to page 222 (for the D800) or whichever page says The Playback Menu: Managing Images, then go to the page for Playback Display Options.

Hope this is what you were looking for.

I am a big fan of books to supplement (maybe substitute) the owners manual. Many are more easily understood. As for electronic form vs hard copy, would you have me lug my laptop out on every photo shoot?

I "bother to read this thread" because I thought I might be of assistance to the OP in regard to the original topic.

Agreed as to our different valuation of time. In light of my own, I'd like to respectfully bring this debate to an end.

Download the manual onto your smartphone and then use the search function. It will speed up the process of finding what you want and you're manual will always be with you.

Just remember to bring magnifying glasses with the phone so you can read after you find what you are searching for.
