Would like to get some opinions on this subject. I've always used PhotoShop for this purpose but am currently considering ON1 Resize. Thoughts? What do you use and how do you like it? Thanks in advance.

On1 is the old Genuine Fractals - and is better than all of the other resizing programs. I would get the whole suite - lots of good stuff in there and now it even does raw.

A professional photographer friend of mine did a test a few years ago and found NO discernible difference among Photoshop and any of the third-party plug-ins. Technology does change however and current products may well be different.

If you are making photos smaller, they are all about the same.

BUT if you are making them larger, its another game. To make an image larger, it has to create new pixels. And here is where the algorithms make a big difference. ON1 is about the best at this.

They are certainly better, Photoshop has to interpolate pixels to do enlargements, so no good!

That's what they all do.

I use Photoshop CC. I still do it the kind of old-fashioned way. I increase the size about 10% at a time. I have found that the upsizing by Photoshop since CC has greatly improved. Years ago I used Digital Fractals and did the same with it. That seemed to work better for me.

ON1 Perfect Resize has been and remains the gold standard for resizing photos. I have been using it since the old days when it was Genuine Fractals, and have no problems resizing cropped images to 24"x36". Highly recommend.

Why is it better?

Save your money. What really matters is the aspect ratio, not the size. If you can avoid using a standard size, crop to what looks good. Leave the file size alone. All you are doing is wasting time and space. Your printer, whether in your office or down the street, has rip software resizing.

From my experience, there doesn't seem to be much difference in resizing photos for many image editing programs. It basically depends upon the original aspect ratio for the image when it was taken in the camera. One thing that may be beneficial when resizing is the ability of the image editing program to perform a content aware fill to expand the image size of the original shot.

Best Regards,
Tom
