In many states, restaurants are allowed to pay waiters and waitresses below minimum wage because they receive tips. It's important to tip at least a reasonable amount so they end up with a fair wage. Ever wonder how the word "tips" came to be? It is an acronym for Toshiba Insure Prompt Service.

In MD and I believe in MA, if the wait staff tips & wage don't come up to the minimum per hour wage the employer has to make up the difference. I thought most states had that law.

The ones that bug me are the restaurants that put the suggested tip amounts, computed on the after tax amount. Sorry, a tip is based on the pre-tax amount. Yes, we compute our own.

Same in CT. But if a waiter/waitress can't make up the difference to minimum wage in tips, they are either terrible at their jobs or their restaurant is on its way out of business.

Just to throw another fly in the ointment - many restaurants "pool" tips. A wait person has to hand in their tips at night and then other lower paid staff (think bus boys, hostesses, dishwashers) get a percentage of the wait persons' tips. So it is possible that the wait staff is not getting paid minimum wage to start with, and still doesn't get to keep all their tips.

I started out as a dishwasher when I worked at a fancy French type restaurant and I can assure you (and anyone else) that many of these restaurant owners can very well afford to pay their help above minimum wage. Many owners have/ own large Mc mansions, brand new cars, boats, etc. One of the three owners I worked for was a urologist and the other was well off enough to throw cocaine parties (I was there and witnessed that) They abruptly went out of business one day and I was the only employ there at the time. I never did receive my last paycheck.

Or as is the problem down here, they just aren't getting the busy hours; those are saved for the "Older", but not necessarily better wait staff. Another reason that is just favoritism is that younger pretty women get higher tips.

In the UK tipping is informal. Mostly Invisible....
I object to London pubs putting a 'setting charge' instead of a tip. You know full well that no-one serving gets it.
Last time I went out for a meal I asked the waitress where the tip jar was....she told me there wasn't one as "nobody tips these days".
In 30 years of catering only one establishment kept a note of who worked any function - those that worked got an equal division of any tip when the bill was paid. Normally only the waiter/ess gets the tip....kitchen staff get nowt! Yet its often the care and attention to the food that drives up tips.
The whole tip system is open to abuse and should be got rid of in MHO

OK, now if a waiter/waitress receives $10 in CASH, how much do they report, not what they are supposed to report, what do they report?

In CT the restaurant is supposed to act as big brother and count and report tips. Of course, we have no way of knowing how much goes in a waitress's bra so it doesn't get counted.

In case someone don't know. Tips mean T.I.P.S. To Insure Prompt Servers. I always over tip. Those girls and guys don't even get minimum wage. I eat all my meals out and I get great service.

We've focused mainly on restaurant tips. Here is a question: Anyone living in NJ or Oregon (I think they are the only other state that requires attendants to pump gas) do you tip the attendant? I don't as a protest to the whole idea that I need someone to stick a hose into my gas tank and pump gas. Now in the old days an attendant would raise the hood, check your oil and clean your front and back windshields. If they still did that I wouldn't mind tipping them, but for just pumping gas, No!

Some people do, some people don't. The way I look at it is the same with waiters, they are usually making minimum wage so I'm sure they would appreciate the extra

But according to this article, there is no hard or fast rule on it

Curious as to what establishment this receipt is from.
If this tip amount was not an error, the business should be called on it publicly as it is a fraudulent way of doing business. I certainly would no longer give them my business.

I've read through this entire thread to find what establishment produced this despicable attempt at fraud. I would like very much to know - I don't think that they deserve secrecy.
