Thom Hogan tells you how to save money on a tripod. Buy a good one first.

Peter....., if it's STILL, that's not exactly FAST food!, now is it?!!

Oh, I don't know, if well balanced on skis or a skateboard one can adopt a somewhat still position and still travel pretty fast! It even helps with the aerodynamics to go even faster, at least on skis!

Tripod? Do I need one of them thingies?

Oh yeah, I actually do use them for video and astro.

I keep one at home, one at work, and one in each vehicle.

That's a little harsh don't you think? I don't recall any name calling. His post is obviously aimed at people who have complained about the cost of certain tripods. I think he is offering a constructive solution to some instances of the stabilization problem. Certainly adding weight be it rocks or sandbags can be overdone but most people who are serious enough about the pursuit of photography to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on their equipment would know when to stop piling on the rocks.

Thank you for sharing.
I commend you creativity, but am disappointed that you had to spoil it with the attitude.

While this works for you in you situation,
it would not work for me in several environments where I have photographed.
- Yellowstone in January, Masi Mara and Antarctica.

If you used the <quote reply> function we would know who you were responding to. It makes it easier to follow...

I assumed that if you read the initial comments it was a bit obvious.

I see people complaining about how much they paid for adequate capacity for their gear on the tripod.

Isn't there a BFRock somewhere near where you are shooting?

Why not learn what I learned from NewYorkInstituteofPhotography in the seventies. Don't carry your stabilizing weight all the way to your photo site. God planted rocks there for you. Sew one of these up.

Tell RRS and some of the others to "Go Stuff It"!!!

Ssshhhh! Don't let this get out! Once it does, RRS and Gitzo will never ever sell a high-end tripod again! But they just might sell a new improved rock-hammock.

No. Assumptions aren't always a good thing. Obvious to you isn't the same as obvious to everybody else.

I think I'll trust my Gitzo 3530LS /Wimberley WH-200 for my 500 F4. Bet that rock must weigh a bit to pack :)

That hammock looks like the Oben Tripod Hammock from B&H for $11.00.

Make sure you weigh your stone first to ensure it doesn't exceed the load capacity

Surely a stone is 14 lbs, isn't it? Even my old lightweight Vanguard supports a massive 4.4lbs. Maybe that's one reason why I got the Gitzo that supports 55lbs and passes the Gene51 test!

And to think I stayed up all night studying for that test. The good news is that I did pass that test with flying colors (Adobe RGB)!
